    Highway/ diff

Anyone know what rpms I may turn at 70mph with a 1:1 fifth gear and a 3.73 diff?

      What size wheels/tires?

if its with the e30 tranny, take it up to 70 in 4th gear and find out for your self. i beleive 4th is 1:1 on the getrag260, but what bwanac posted sounds about right.

          tires are 195/(60 or 65)/r14

First and Second are very short.

          This the m50 and e36 fivespeed mated to a e30 3.73 LSD. I used a 85 318i Automatic driveshaft.

I think I will end up getting the 2.9 or 3.1 LSD because I could care less about the hole shot, I like quite cruising and it makes plenty of torque.

the swap was fun, but I wish I had a shop at home, I used my grandpa's and driving back and forth was a pain.

Regrets: Buying LWF from Zionsville. Buying SS pipe from Burns Stainless. 3.73 LSD

Anyone want to buy a great 3.73 LSD? I will let it go for about 300, that would be enough for me to then buy a 3.15 LSD, which is what I want.

Wiring was the easiest part, set-in is a bitch, but it looks awesome and sounds even better with no exaust!

If I were to do this again I would have gone with an s50 or s52, you can find them fora bout a grand or two more.

Do you have a suitable diff to put back in? I have a 2.93 (or whatever was in an 86 eta) with less than 110K on it. Didn't leak, nor did it make any noise... two things my new 3.73 can't boast.

I'd let it go way cheap.

Just for clarification... 86es, which had an LSD.

I have the 3.73 in there right now and by the math I top out at 115mph!

I am getting the 2.93, or a 3.15 if i can find one.

Does the e36 diff bolt right up, other than swapping the rear covers?

No, Did you put alot of thought before jumping into this project? We seem to hear the same questions over and over again.

I did as much resaerch as I could, I just did not know about the e36 diff. I was also told that the large case did not mount up where a small case was, that is wrong, so I thought I would ask about the e36 diff, seeing as how some people think they know something, spread that info and are completely wrong.

Where can I find the gear ratios for different transmissions?

                            dunno.

the only thing about the ratios i know is:

                            e30 325- Getrag 260 .81 fifth gear
                            e36 318 and 325- 1:1 fifth

IMO a one to one top gear is better than "overdrive" ( I know manual "overdrive" is different than automatics") in that a 1:1 fifth gear allow about 5% more power to get to the ground. This is because no gears are engauging one another. With that you can run a lower numerical diff and still ahve the smae power to the road and gain some top end.

With the .81 you are gaining the extra RPMs to the diff, but at a slight lose in power.

E36 differentials do not bolt up.
