project daily driver a restoration story

Finally started on my new e30 project. Yes the old project is still underway, but unlike my other e30 this one will become my daily driver. The car is an 86 325e which has seen better days. My best friend bought the car as a project but doesen't have time for it, so I'm taking it over. As it sits right now, she will a transmission, driveshaft, complete interrior, suspension, tires, and hood plus some mis. rubber parts. The engine has high miles but runs fine. The body is is decent shape, oxidized paint, and some rust on the floor, probally due to sun roof leeking.

The goals of this project are to have a reliable daily driver thats cheep. I have sitting around, a complete interrior, tranny, hood. Things that are questionable, suspension and drive shaft. I will probally rob the shocks from my 325is as I will be upgading to koni adjustables to go along with the 5 lug swap. I have a driveshaft, but at best it needs a new CSB and balancing, I'll take a closer look at it before putting it in. I may just rob the drive shaft out of my 325is and replace that one with a rebuild shaft.

Anyway on with the pictures. Sorry some of these are terrable since it was dark out once I finished ripping out the interrior. I will keep this thread updated as work progresses.

Yes this hood is hi-temp aluminum paint with some other paint smeard on it

Here you can see the back seat..very nasty. the interrior was tan and was spray painted black while in the car. There was a mice nest under the back seat as well.

When the car is done it will be painted grey metalic, cardnal red interrior, and be riding on bbs basketweavs. The Lips will be silver, and the centers painted grey metalic to match the car. I'd like to lower it, but as a dd, that fairly pointless. Also under consideration is a late style valance since I have one sitting around.

I seriously wish I could do that to a e30. I don't have the cash money right now though. I'll just have to stick with my current one right now.

It's going to be such a nice feeling making that thing run again. Keep us updated!
The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

This is progress on day 2 of work.

I cut out all the bad rust, used a wire bursh on the rest of the rust in the floor. I then coated the mettal. Before the new carpet goes in I will finish patching the holes and under coat both the top and bottom of the floor to prevent further rust. I also removed all the sound deding meterial.

day 3 of work. Today I took a set of mint leather 4 door seat and converted them into 2 door seats. I discoverd that the frames are the same, the only difference is the 2 door seats have 2 brackets welded onto the seat back that holds the cable pullies that allows the seat to tip forward. So I took the backs off and swapped the upholstry.

There are little metal ties that hold the upholstry to the seat frame. There are impossible to work with, so I decided to use wire ties, the reinstall went much better after switching to these.

LOL I guess I should have come up with a better title. Maby the title should have been project spend less on fuel. I have a some what long commute to work now and my jeep is totally killing me on gass, I have to fill it up every other day. Enter this 325e, the car was free, just needs some parts and work. Most of the parts I have, and my labor is free, so I'm hopeing to end up having a decent car for under $500, it should pay for its self in no time in fuel savings.

so the goals for this car are to just make it dencent and reliable.

I didn't want to leave rust under it to make more holes in the floor. it can't be that bad, I'm putting carpet and all that jaz back in...

edit right now I drive an 86 jeep with 266k miles...now thats loud
