i have an eta and its not going to break any speed records but it has great torque and is more then enough to have fun with in the legal limits and still get great mpg when you just cruise it, these cars really are a true drivers car. i have a 2003 acura 3.2cl and honestly most days i would much rather drive the eta with terrible paint two out of four working windows, oil leaks ect ect the car has a soul, even with stock suspension and bottlecaps with el cheapo pepboys tires the car loves the twisties the car isnt about how fast it gets up to speed but who can keep up in the turnsComment

Mike,
You have asked me many many many multiple times about your E30 and how to make it fast. I have responded everytime trying to give you the best advice given your situation.
You have a eta. Take advantage of the torque to make it a fun car. Everyone constantly bitches and whines about the eta being a slow turd. Yes in stock form it is meant to be a fuel economy car. But there are several ways to make it much more exciting.
As I have told you several times before:
3:46LSD and a CHIP. I don't know what is so hard to understand about this. Here it is so many months later and your still complaining your car has no power or excitement yet you continue to do nothing about it.
You want to swap in all these different engines in the hopes of making it fast yet you have no money to work with. Even if you swapped in any other engine your still going to have to swap the rear diff. So why not start right there and get a rear diff.
I purchased my 3:46LSD from The Euro Depot for $400 I got my ebay chip for $40. So about $450 completely transformed the performance of my eta. You can easily do the same. When I first got my car it was slow, I asked around 'What can I do to make my eta more performance orientated?' The answer was a chip and diff. The diff was the very first thing I did to the car and I have to say it was the single best upgrade you can do to a eta.
And since you got my started. Did you ever bother to replace all the stripped lug bolts or are you still running those? The rears where so bad I myself would not even be willing to drive the car for fear the wheel might come loose.
You have to understand you purchased a 20yr old car, and to be honest it was in really bad shape to even begin with.
CHIP AND DIFF, DO IT.Comment

^i've done quite a bit of work on my car since i got it back from you. i have NOT gotten an lsd or a chip because i feel like these would only agitate currently inferior stock parts. i WANT them badly. the several hundred that i've spent on parts like a radiator, oil pan, and YES, 16 brand new lug bolts from turner motorsports, are constantly setting me back more and more. So don't tell me i'm complaining without reason. I just feel like with all the work i've put in the car, it's barely making par, and THAT is what's discouraging me. i KNOW that it's expected, but is it inhuman to feel a little discouraged by the money:performance gain ratio? and like i mentioned before, the shifter has got a lot of excessive play in it. once i get to la, i'd like you to check that out.
and a big fuck you to shiftbmw. it takes more of your goddam time to actually reply to my worthless threads, so why do it? do me a favor and quit with your goddam bitching. Leave the responses to the guys with something HELPFUL to say. I'm goddam newb to cars, and i'm asking for some goddam help. If it's a big deal to help me out and reply, then please, fucking, don't.1985 325e

Generally speaking, inspiration doesn't come from asking for it. If you want motivation, go look at some top notch E30's and think to yourself, "I want my car to be like these cars," then log off the computer, go to your job or your classes, come back outside and get to work.
You want your car to be better? Don't pray and hope, just read, learn and do work. There's no magic. Posting for inspiration rarely helps.Comment

I've got an e36 325is and an e30 318is. Lets just say its a love hate relationship with my e36...Not that it hasn't been with the e30... It has been pretty reliable, besides the cooling system... They are more expensive to maintain then the e30 (in less your looking for body panels, which doesn't count as maintenance) All in all, if your a starving artist/student, it'll be better to stick with the e30.sigpicComment

""I know you've spent lots of $$$ getting the car into as-good-as-stock condition, but that's the game you play with older cars.
I agree.......Ive got at least $1700 in it now just to get mine almost up to par. Id rather spend it on restoring a ol BMW than purchasing some other hooptie and replacing parts as they break. That was my thoughts when looking for a daily driver.[sigpicComment

this was the simiar logic i used to convince myself to get an e30, id rather put parts into this car then a civic or my old altima and im getting better mpg witht eh eta then i did with the altima.""I know you've spent lots of $$$ getting the car into as-good-as-stock condition, but that's the game you play with older cars.

Think of how awesome it will feel when you have everything sorted?? You do not want an E36. Personal feelings aside, EVERY person Ive known in the last decade that went from E30-E36 regretted it and some even went back to an E30.

as a student and a starving artist, i'm finding it very discouraging to try and work on my car...practically everything needs to be replaced/fixed and i've made some headway, but it seems hard to follow through. i've got no money and very little time. i'd just rather sell it and get a clean e36 or something...
am i crazy talking or is it warranted? will a clean e36 give me just as much/more problems? My eta is just so slow and i just want something that will run strong until i have time and money to fix/mod it.
This is not asking for help...this is asking for sympathy...
Here's some help...crying harder won't make your ETA run better. Neither will trying to learn to drift in it. Start reading and trying to further your knowledge. This thread does nothing to increase your knowledge in any way.
And again, there's a difference between a newb question and a whiney ass emo fishing question looking for someone to stroke your nuts with their mouth.
"How do I change my oil" is a newb qustion, as is "How do I remove my valve cover."
By contrast, "I know this is the 7th time I've asked...in 2 months...but should I sell my car or trade it or add some modzzz? I only ask(again and again) because I'm a starving emo fucktard..." and so on is not a newb question. It's just retarded.

Additionally, I believe I directly addressed your original question. To reiterate, I said GET THE FUCKING E36. I then provided my explicit reasoning for saying so.
That is all.Last edited by shiftbmw; 09-18-2008, 05:19 PM.sigpic
