car will start but wont run constantly

hey i just put in a cone filter on my 325es and the car will start and turn over but wont keep running. i had to pull the mass air flow and air box off and that was it. i put the mass air flow meter back on with the cone filter hooked up to it instead of the air box. there is an exhaust leak but the car ran fine before i put the filter on. when i pull the filter off it does the same thing. any ideas?

um no... i pulled the air box and mass air flow meter off bc i had to modify the air the box and it was easier with it off the car then i put them back on. this is my only mode of transportation so if your just going to laugh go somewhere else

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You should probably go back to the box set up. With the description given, you'll get a couple of laughs. Go back to box, but I've never heard of this going wrong. The exhaust leak should not affect this at all.

Dude, you car WILL NOT RUN without the mass air flow meter....

Stay away from everything under the hood of your car... I say that just for your benifit.

Why did you change the filter? theres really no point in doing so. Did you disconnect any other cables?

That the best advice you will ever get... The standard box setup will do just as good if not better. Just change the filter, besides you get colder air with the stock setup.

the mass air flow meter is in the car plugged in. the only thing that changed is that instead of the air box being connected to it, the new air filter is.

well the way you typed it made it seem that the air flow meter was out of the car...
Clean off the contacts and check if you tore the intake boot... put everything back the way it was and make sure you didnt touch the needle inside the afm. if so time for a new one..

Spray some lectramotive @ the thing. Make sure you didn't fray any wires. What you're saying is that it starts, but it dies? Make sure the boot isn't torn...Check the throttle position sensor....It's an e, so isn't there an extra vacuum line comin from the intake hose? I'd reckon it could be a culprit.

no i didnt touch anything inside the afm and there is no visible damage to any of the rubber. and just for clearification... the afm is in the car and the car starts up but when it goes to idol it dies. thanks for all the help so far guys

Ya know what. I bet if you opened that afm electrical box and pushed the needle slightly to the right of where it tries to sit while starting the car it would idle. Had that happen once. Had to replace that entire fixture.

You really can't mess with it permanently, per se. It's just that if you know / saw the needle we're talkin bout, it's probably too late lol. You can move / adjust it by hand, but as soon as you release it, it'll drop down to whatever it is set to be on. Correct if I'm wrong, anyone. Easy to mess up.

Picture of that needle there. didn't wanna hot link it. Cheers.

Or you could have knocked some dirt loose in the idle control valve.

What you need to do is clean the idler, then open the afm and clean the copper thing. Make sure both prongs are touching the board and slide it with your finger and make sure theres no resistance.

If the car dies at idle you have a vacuum leak somwhere, keep looking...
