Just when I thought I had set my mind on 24v....

I have to go and do something like look at backtrail69's car and Tchao on e30tech.

I thought I had made my mind up to doing an OBD-I S52 with injectors, HFM and Sunbelt cams. Not an inexpensive proposition.

I realize to do a stroker turbo M20, or properly built 24v are both going to be pricey. 24v gets me high revving NA power.........M20 gets me that sweet, sweet turbo noise!

Now I'm starting to think a 2.8-3.0 turbo M20 and run a standalone with a low and high boost tune.

Just rambling on a friday morning since I don't feel like working, short timer syndrome like crazy.

Just 24v. Don't put yourself thru the headache of putting a custom engine together, just drop one in.

S52 will probably be more reliable.

That's what I have been thinking.

But an overbuilt M20 turbo, like backtrail's car, should probably be pretty reliable too.

Who knows...........my wandering mind comes up with dozens of ideas daily.

M52 turbo. Cheap motor. WAAAY better VE than the M20 so you can run low boost and still make big power on just a HG. Plus you can get a remote tune from TRM so no need for standalone.

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

^That's not a bad idea. With that route the most important thing for me would be a properly sized turbo so that the car has a more NA or S/C like torque curve vs wait for it........wait for it..........WHOOOSH GO!

My biggest thing is that I don't really want to give up my AC as well, which is why just doing a straight 24v no turbo or S/C comes in because that would be easy.

I say go for the turbo if you want a "fast car"- more power is as easy as raising the boost.-
on my "junkyard build" I am only running 7psi and have killed plenty of euro e36 m3s witht he 321hp 3.2
I am sure my car can take another 7-15 psi more and would be insane.
after driving my turbo car, my M3 feels so boring- honestly!

a stock NA s52 makes more then enough power for daily driving and track use. actually anything over 250hp and is past the average drivers capabilities. unless youre looking for bragging rights. a cammed m52 (in a e30) was past my abilities as a driver and im a pretty damn good one.
