Inspected a 325is... Need help with problems....

    Hey guys,

New to this forum. Recommended here from some E30 guys on Bimmerforums.

Anyways, I'm about to pick up an 87 325is and have some quesitons from the inspection I gave it last week.

Car has 112k miles. I checked the compression and it was solid across all the cylinders.

Now I did find a couple issues that you guys might be able to help me out with.

    1. There is some sort of fluid leaking on the bottom of the tranny housing. You can see it by sticking your head under the car. Do the trannies leak much? Any common problem that this might indicate???

    2. There is a minor "clunk" noise coming from the front end when I was parking the car. The front end bushings need replacing so I'm hoping this might be the issue. Anyone have this issue? Hopefully its not a motor mount.....

Other than that, the car needs a big tune up and it should be a solid car. Looking to get it for around $1250, which seems to be a good deal on a relatively low mileage E30 'is' model.

Look forward to joining the E30 crowd! :D Its just so much more fun to throw around corners than my E36 M3.....

Is the leak coming from the front or back of the transmission? If it's the rear, either your output seal or selector rod seal are shot. If it's the front, it's either the input shaft seal of your tranny or the rear main seal of your engine (you can pretty much tell which it is by smelling the fluid).

The clunk could be lots of things - description is kind of vague. Don't be scared if it's a motor mount though, those are only like $20.

        Thanks for the replies guys.....

As far as the leak, I'm not sure which end it was coming out of. Lets hope it will be a seal that I wont have to pull the tranny to replace.

Thats not what I wanted to hear, but I do know the racks can go out in them. What other symtopms do you have for the blown steering rack? Leaks? I checked it out on the car, and I didnt see any leaks. Seemed to operate fine on the test drive as well.

Will an E36 rack fit on an E30? I've got an extra E36 rack that I wouldn't mind throwing in the E30.... :?:

Most times when I read about someone with a blown steering rack, there's going to be fluid all over it.
The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

Thats what I would have guessed.

I also did the steering rack boot test. Pinch the boot and see if the insides of the boot slide easily aganist each other or not. If they slide easily, usually means there is fluid leaking out of the rack, into the boots. There was plenty of friction (rubber on rubber), so I doubt there are any leaks.

I'm hoping for worn bushings causing the clunk...

if you have an e36 m3 rack, it would make for a good upgrade. if its the rack there will be fluid everywhere, i mean like when i pour in a bottle, it will be gone in a day. i also have shitty bushings, the whole front end is being rebuilt though( CA, urethane CAB, swaybar bushings, rack n pinion, tie rod ends, front struts, and sway bar end links), im hoping for a huge improvement.

Good to hear that rack fits. 8)

With the description you gave, I think the clunk is some sort of worn bushing. Shouldn't be an issue, as i'll be doing a full bushing replacment on the car.

Thanks again for the help! Lots of good info here.
