    e60 550i

-A (generous) freind of mine let me drive his 550i/6m Sport around this past weekend while my e30 was/is under the knife. Drove it up to Boone/Blowing Rock, NC for the SouthEast BMW Fall Meet, and to/from work a couple days, what a blast! My impressions:

-Its an 2006 550i, six-speed manual, Sports package, Titanic-met on black leather.

GOOD: Its a totally and mind-blowingly cool car. Loads of torque (4.8l v8.), the Valvetronic and Dual-VANOS go a wonderful job of smoothing out the curve, from off-idle to redline. The sound the engine makes is crazy cool, just a bit "different", and 360hp does a great job moving this beast! Great brakes, one panic-induced stop from 50-ish left my chest hurting from the seatbelt! Steering is nice and tight, not sure if all the e60 Sports have Active Steering (vaiable ratio rack thingy) but this one did. Kinda cool, the steering was slow and easy on the highway, but quick in parking lot. The clutch was smooth and the shifter well-spaced and notchy, all six gears had a nice, positive engagment and rev-matched well. iDrive wasn't all that bad to live with, I could do without it, but it didn't ruin the car.

BAD: The factory Bridgestones have OK grip but still suck- a lot. They roar on the highway and really aren't that sporty anyway- I would swap them out for some Mitch Pilot Sports, but it's not my car! The cupholders are crap... what German designed these? The Park-Assist is a nice feature, but it either didn't come on when I wanted it, or wouldn't shut up when I didn't need it. The ball joints seemed to be going out on this car, it kind of "darted" a bit when the front suspention was loaded up, maybe this was related to the Active Steering?

-All and all, I can't complain, this is a great and compliant car, if you're thinking of buying an e60 Sport, do it! BTW... prices on early e60s have fallen, there's an 04 545i/6m Sport for sale near my home for $21k. Not bad if you're in the market!

Yep, they are very nice cars...friend of mine has a '04 545i/6 sport forsale (link to follow for a thread bump) and it's a great car to drive. The E60 is a nice car overall-my mother is leasing a '07 525i and she loves it, another friends mother has a '08 535i-I see more E60's than I do any other new BMW in this area.

But talking about values on them falling-yes, they have been. But it lets you pick up a hell of a car for not much money. Here is my friends car that I am selling for him:

I have seriously considered selling my E39 M5 and buying the 545i, but not sure about that. It is for sure a very nice car, but the M5 is a special beast.

Im a fan of the E60s. Ive driven pretty much every BMW out there on trades for our dealership. Id have to say the 535 is my favorite non M car. Theyre super nice cars, though Im not the hugest fan of the headlights. The worst IMO are the 4.8 X5s, theyre heavy and oversized.

Wow. I actually dont mind how the ballsy 550i's look with the rims and the kit and that business. That car must be a fucking dream to drive. Shit my dads E34 540i 6Speed is already really comfy and fast and smooth and torquey.

They seem like alright cars if you own them in the first 3 or 4 years before the interior (inevitably) goes to hell. I had some seat time a couple of weeks ago in a 550i SMG, it's jerky as hell around town, but I love the sequential noise.

OP, the HD's are ready and waiting, you should have given me a call when you passed through. Let me know.

Well, that goes for pretty much any new car. They are made to last warranty now. Not 20+ years like our tanks-of-a-car. E24's, E30's, E12's (besides rust), E28's, etc. Over-engineering FTMuthafuckenW

Bingo. Everything made before the E36 was made during BMW's glory days, now their expiration date parallels the warranty expiration date.
