I'm really interested in an e30 i found, but don't know much about what to look for when checking them out. I've heard you can hire some one(mechanic?) to check out any normal problems that tend to be found when purchasing. How should I go about this? Thanks!

Yeah, a pre-purchase inspection is usually what they call that. Just call up some different places, ask what they check and what they charge.
