That beast is called an Evolution II. Another homologation special, that is Mercedes "Race car for the streets" and is the #1 reason that BMW built the E30 M3.

Not quite, the Evo II is the "evolution" of the 190e 16v race car. They had 3 versions just like the E30 M3. The MB Evo II was built along the time of the Evo3 M3. MB also was racing the 190 E 16v before BMW built the M3 for DTM in 1987 (in 1986 they raced 325i's against the MB). If anything, BMW built the M3 to compete with the 190E ;)

Let me put it another way then, the M3 2.5L Evo3 (not the original 2.3L M3) was built to compete with the 190e 2.5L Evo II at the height of development for the DTM cars....makes sense now? ;)

Chris, speaking in non-specific terms, the M3 happened because BMW wanted to beat up on MBZ.

You and I both know that, and that the Evo III (shown) was the final result, just as the M3 evolved.
