Small, light, RWD, easy to work on.

They fall under the same criteria.

An A2 Golf/GTI has completely different handling characteristics than an E30, but in terms of cheapness/part availibility/etc. it is quite similar. Maybe a hardtop NA Miata.

I'm trying to convince my friend that he should buy an older car and fix it up so that he can finally have some fun behind the wheel. But he doesn't want an E30. What would be a comparable car to an E30? I was thinking maybe a VW MKII or something? What else do you guys think?
