Make sure you have gear oil! If you do and it's only a noise in 2nd, you most likely have a gear or bearing going bad, but chances are it will last a long time even if it's making noise. If you start getting funky vibrations along with the whine you might want to look for a used transmission.
BTW, gear whine in 1st and 2nd is fairly common on the big six powered cars, so is it possible you just started noticing something that has always been there?
