Can CV joints make a screeching noise?

Starts suddenly at about 25 MPH, cuts out when the car comes to a stop. Doesn't always show up, and isn't very regular. Sumetimes goes away after driving a bit. The car drives fine, but the noise is rather obnoxious. It varies only with wheel speed.

Normally, CV joints click, but I just did the wheel bearings, so that can't be it unless I damaged them on install. Joints have 210k miles on them.

If I inject some CV joint grease into the boot, will that cause a problem? I don't know if CV grease is generally compatible with other CV grease, or what effect having 2 types of grease will have.

Any ideas or opinions on the matter? I would prefer to not have to buy new axles.

I'm not so sure they will make a "screeching" noise

did you check for play/binding? Also, check your calipers, maybe one is hung-up.

I thought about the calipers, but the brakes work fine and brake use does not seem to affect the noise. It may do something under heavy pressure, but the car stops so quickly that the noise dies off before I can determine an effect.

Bump, still havn't figured it out. Brakes look fine, but I'll have to pull them off to be sure.

look at the brake backing plate may be touching the rotor.
