So I decided to follow in Eric Lukas footsteps.....

Thursday I switched majors. Some friends were surprised, and it was pretty funny. Anyway, I am now in Purdue's School of Management, instead of Engineering.

I decided pretty certainly I did not want to be an engineer as a career, and feel very strongly that I want to enjoy my job, so I chose to change over to business, as I love economics and business and shit.

Anyway, maybe in a couple years, I'll be producing my own products for E30s, and selling them on ebay, and whatnot. But yeah, it felt good to relieve myself of the stress I was feeling about doing something I didn't want to.

I was thinking about going the Engerneering route also. I find mechanical engeneering alot more enjoyable than architectural, people start setting retarded goals then.

Ha, wanna make bets on when you will turn to the enlightened side?

Or anyone else we know in ENGR? Russ, Steve, Zack, Noah, Mike, Sam, etc ? You know like 40% of us are switching out by the end, likely at the semester. I just beat all you sad fuckers to it!

Actually, we have to tone it down, or do it in Frats. We kinda got busted. Oops. No more parties in the appt, at least not ones with alcohol. Fun while it lasted.

Choose whatever major that will lead you to an enjoyable career... otherwise, what's the point?

That said, I would say its kinda hard to have any idea of what engineering is about after a week of school. Although, honestly engineering really didn't "click" until my sophomore year.

Best of luck, have fun at school, and find yourself a career that will make you happy.... because you'll be doing it for the next 30+ years :).

Yeah, I did a four year engineering degree. Didn't really have it figured out until my fourth year, when i was involved in building a racecar (anyone heard of Formula SAE?). Then I knew engineering was for me :) You never really know what a career/industry is going to be like until you get involved in a major project or get some practical experience.

Well I'm in Engineering but I'm doind an Associates in it. A lot's more hands on then if I got a BA. in it.
I prefer the CAD/CAM stuff a lot more then I do the Mechanical Engineering part.
What classes had you started to take when you made this choice? I don't remember any of my first classes being that hard.

Actually, only like one class changed for me. But it was pretty much people I know who are engineers that kinda made me not want to do it.

One is an automotive engineer.....whose career is designing interior door handles.
Another designed fan blades for 7 years (before becoming a Senior Engineering Exec @ Boeing.....and uber baller and huge house) and he is my father's cousin.

But I didn't want to do those little boring things, and math and science: I was good at them, but for the most part never really enjoyed them beyond that. I simply wanted to get through with them and didn't strive to learn more.

You don't have to be an engineer with an engineering degree. Many people my dad works with for his consulting job have engineering degrees, and he has a degree in management. Especially in the future, I think there is going to be big opportunities for people with eng. degrees, especially with how technically adavanced the world is becoming. There needs to be people who understand all that shit. Everybody has a business degree, and the job market isn't exactly flourishing right now to distinguish one business grad from another.

im kinda going the opposite route.

im in business management right now although i plan on going into mechanical engineering after this year.

my dream would be to have a ME major and business management minor.

You're flip flopping majors your first semester?

                          You had a major declared?

                          Wow.

Why would I go through all the hassle of an engineering degree and NOT use it. I know that engineers can be useful in other fields, etc. But so can physicists, doesn't mean I should study physics and then work at an insurance company desk....

And Drew, I don't know about UT (?) but Purdue has a program where I could minor in Engineering, or Physics, or Chem, or Math, etc. etc.

Matt, the thing is there are a lot of people out there, and not so many jobs all the time. Has Brandon gotten a job yet? He graduated a while ago as a ME, and had trouble finding work. Also, my mom is working as part of a chair to hire new actuaries at the company for which she works and a lot of people with math/acturial sciences degrees are not employed in their field, but rather at banks, schools, etc.

Bottom line. It's my education and my career, so I why should my major be what everyone recommended, instead of the field I am actually interested in. There will be opportunities in business as long as this nation is still capitalist.

If all else fails, I have a foot in the door into real estate. Bite down and start that journey of living off small, rare commissions.....or use a management/economics/business education to buy, update/clean up houses, and resell them or rent them.

And Yes, Charlie, I've switched in the first week. But better now than later.

You gotta enjoy it mang. I loved every minute of my CS degree and pulled out a 3.2 cumulative. Now that I am getting into the meet of this International Biz my grades are steadily improving.

                              Its just easier to focus.
                              Im now E30less.
