man, back right before the accident i was well into shape thanks to brutal lacrosse practice every day:
      p.s. im 6"2'

before lax - way outa shape and weighed 180lbs
2 days before the accident, end of the season - in shape 165 lbs
after the accident - couldnt walk, 135lbs
now that im in school and i have a fantastic gym that is easly accessable i have been going every other day and getting on the bike for 20 minutes then doing a full body workout. and it has drastically improved me so far. keep in mind my legs still suck and i cant run so the bike is about the best i can do. right now im about 160lbs and trying to get back to the way i was.

at the beginning of the season last year i was runnin a 7 minute mile. by the end of the season i could pull of a 5:45. and i could do 2.5 in under 15 minutes.

when im on the bike im defintally listening to my ipod, which was a great investment.

personally, i think i have more motivation right now than anyone else... but thats kinda a situational thing. my goal by the end of this year is to be up to 190 and not have my legs hurt just going up and down stairs.

its a hard long road, but im not gona let my legs get the best of me.

Definitly get some comfortable running shoes, even if they look funny, youll be much happier with them. Good luck with this, hope you stay with it. If you're put in a situation where you have the choice of asphalt or concrete, the asphalt is softer. Just some tips. I've been running for 5-6 years now in Cross Country and Track. I ran 7 miles today, it was a bitch then b/c of the heat, but feels great now.

Thus far I have logged about 600 miles since mid june. Best advice is to take it easy, strech alot, even when you dont tihnk you need it, and run at a pace where you can talk in short phrases. When you hurt one day, take it easy and dont be afraid to take days off. As for shoes, yes, buy new ones, youll thank yourself later.

Here here! Actually, since I have started to get serious about biking, I don't care too much to gain lots of mass just to look good.

I used to always be heavy. Like man-boobs big. And then I was in summer gym before Freshmen year in high school. The teacher said something like 'Shape the new you' or whatever.

I didn't gain that much muscle, but it helped. More muscle = more energy spent doing anything, or nothing at all. Also started eating a little better, but mostly just burning more calories at rest, and in activity.

I have stayed about 6 foot the last several years. And 8th grade was like 175 i think. Maybe a few inches shorter, but the weight was mostly fat. Then burned it off somehow and went all the way down to 155 i think, while growing an inch. I was string bean.

Then I got into weights, and started lifting and giving myself enough growth to look pathetic. Not until last year were any lifts respectible, at best. I went from 165 to 180 during lifting, mostly because of more muscle. I was pushing 185 Last semester, trying to get stronger, bigger.

Now I am back at 175, but with more fat just a little more, and some unused muscles. Haven't exercised at all this summer, and hurt myself during spring break so I couldn't do squat. But I am walking/biking more, just to get around campus, so that will help. But I am eating more, because I am on a meal plan, and don't want to waste $. Bad or not, I probably ate less during the summer because I am too lazy to feed myself unless I really need to eat. Which is bad, but not as bad as feeding myself because I am bored.

I need to get back in the game, and use the rec center on campus.

**But Josh, running is all good, but I would recommend lifting weights as a good way to burn more calories when you are sitting on the computer or whatnot. It sounds silly, but burning muscle makes your body use more calories 24/7. **

btw, I think i told Matt, maybe. But the subway Jared guy went to my High School. And he was a pretty skinny dude. Then he went to college and studeid in his dorm and snacked. And that's how he gained all the weight. So watch your asses, and the scale. Don't gained the freshmen 150.

oh yeah. Most people focus on abs, arms, and chest.....but my weight coach said the most important lift is the parallel squat, if there was only one he could choose that would be it. Get your leg muscles large and you will burn a lot of calories.

@ 5ft 11 I am contempt with my lanky self and weight. If you don't gain weight, you're not meant to. You can cheat with those protein supplements etc but I wouldn't adivse it as the long term effects can be

For this first week (starting today), I've started with going for 30 minutes. I stretch for about 5-6 minutes, then walk briskly for 5 minutes, to get everything warmed up, then run at a comfortable pace for as long as I can before I start to get breathing to heavily, about 2 minutes. Then I walk until I catch my breath again, no more than 3 minutes.

This may seem like not very much to a lot of you, but keep in mind that I have always been pretty out of shape, and this is new to me. I hope I can stick with it, and lose some of this weight!
Awesome! Definetly takes a lot of motivation to get in shape and stay in shape. I ran cross country through high school, and love running. Stopped once I got to college, and I regret it. Its so much harder now to get started back up on a routine.

I seem to have the opposite problem. In high school I was skinny but atleast in shape. Now that I'm in college, I'm a little less skinny, but totally out of shape. Time for me to bit the bullet, start eating right, workout, and cut the excuses.

I'm 5'11". A year ago I was 240lbs...yes 240. I started the Atkins diet. A year later I'm at 190lbs (2 pants sizes smaller) and feel great. Now all I have to do is work out to tone up and lose another 10lbs to be at my ideal weight. The best part is that I fit into my sports seats a lot easier. Good luck!
