Many retailers are thinning out seasonal employees, as this holiday season is turning into a major bust. Target might be looking for any excuse to get rid of ANYONE that is in their probation period. As mentioned, it is strange that they gave you a reason. It's safer legally not to. It will be hard to find any seasonal jobs at the moment, but I'd think there is something out there if you look...monster, careerbuilder, hotjobs, indeed.com.

It will be hard (impossible) to get into now, but if you are going to work big box retail, you should look into Best Buy. Overall, good company to work for. All retail has issues, especially at that size, but they are pretty solid.

Not to push the issue, but if you're interested there's ways around surgeries like that. Particularly because the Army needs people right now, as well.
I'd never hear the end of it if I joined any branch other than the Marines. :P

I had two major abdominal surgeries last year, and my uncle, a recruiter, said that MEPS would DQ me instantly with my medical history

I wont pass MEPS, I've had two major surgeries.

As for the job hopping goes, my first job was when I was 16, and isn't actually documented. My mom had me doing data entry at her work for $7.00 an hour under the table. My first real job was at a Del Taco. I worked there for about 4 months, before the owner went crazy and the General Manager quit. Most of the rest of us shortly followed. I quit after I'd been hired at Wal-Mart. I worked there for 8 months before getting a job with NEXCOM, which is the on base exchange store distributer for the Navy. I worked there for 2 months before I got really sick and I was hospitalized. I was on disability for a year after that, and needless to say my position had been filled by that time.

Long story short, I got canned.

Does anyone need a grease monkey at a shop in SoCal? I can do oil changes and fluid flushes and I am willing to learn how to do other stuff involving mechanics. Please help me out, the job market around here is absolutely fucked and I don't know what else to do. I would prefer slightly above minimum wage, but I'll take minimum. At least 30 hours a week would be nice, but I'm flexible. Please help me out guys. I work hard and you'll never hear me tell you I won't do a job unless I'm absolutely certain I can't do it.
You're only 20 years old and have gone thru 5 employers already?

I do some of the hiring evals for my company and if I see a résumé with that kind of job hopping history, it doesn't even get a 2nd look.

I don't know what your situation is, but that's a major red flag.

It takes time and money to train new employee's. No one wants to invest the time and money into someone with that type of history.

Figure out what you like, what you're good at and pursue a job in that field.

A career in the military might be a good option as well. You do your 20 years, retire with a pension and benefits for life and you can work in the private sector and draw a paycheck there too.

I have a friend who joined the Army at age 19, did his 20 years and he gets a nice check every month, plus medical and he used his military training to land a decent job that pays 60K per year on top of his monthly retirement check from the Army.

Not to mention he traveled the world and spent time in numerous countries and had lots of great experiences.

It's not for everyone, but it beats the hell out of working for min wage in retail and after you put in your 20, you walk away with a monthly check and benefits for life and have the option to work in the private sector and make even more money, plus your military training and experience will look good on a résumé as it shows discipline, dedication, loyalty, etc...

Oh yeah, you also get to fire a bunch of cool weapons.

Find a smaller company to work for where the employees are treated more like family. The big companies may not be suited for you. Get in at a euro repair shop with enough bays that they need a lot boy who can also perform some oil changes. Cars always need to be fixed.
I worked for the government for a while in their west coast DC for the navy exchange. best job i ever had. but then i got sick and had surgery and was disabled for a year, and they couldnt hold my position.

Absolutely. I agree with you 100%. I'm sure I pissed off the HR manager in some small way or another, she's pretty easy to set off from what I've heard from other/former employees. Was just wanting to vent, pretty much, and maybe get a lead or two on another job.

Good people are hard to find, if you are so good, then there should be no reason to get rid of you. i suggest you take a step back, look at the reason they fired you, and ask yourself "If I were in their shoes, would I have fired someone for this?" If you are as good as you imply, you probably would have.
Why don't you let us know honestly what "unsafe" practices you were involved in. In the corporate retail world, one unsafe act can lead to a hefty lawsuit.
The only two unsafe things I did were loading up the cart machine with 4 too many carts, and once i used the machine to push the inside rows over to straighten them out (they were anal about that). I was talked to about both of these, and I didnt do them after it was brought up. However, my actual manager, and not the one that did the paperwork to can me, said that there's a bunch of these "coachings" on file that I was never aware of, nor was I talked to about them. I can understand being written up if they felt that my performance wasnt up to par, or at least talking to me, but I was never spoken to about any of these supposed incidents. I'm not trying to claim they're 100% at fault, I just dont understand how two incidents, both of which management had never had a problem with previously, blew up into 10 supposed write ups.

If your a kid, you are at the bottom of the totem pole. Can't do anything about that. Do what the bosses say and be done with it.

Generally a boss won't be bitchy if everyone is doing there job. Work isn't supposed to be fun in games. If it were they wouldn't be paying you.

I could very well be off base here. Just a thought.
I would agree with you 100% on the bitchy part, but I'm not the only one who's had problems with this specific manager. Apparently the customers have filed many complaints against her because of her attitude, as well as other employees.

I've only run into this problem at 2 of my 5 jobs, both of which happened to be retail, so it seems kind of like a pattern to me. It always seems to be the ones who have been there forever too.
