    Heater Valve Recall??

I got a letter yesterday from my BMW dealership saying that my car has a recall and I need to bring it in. After a few phonecalls back and forth between the dealer and I, I found out it is something to do with a heater valve. Has anyone else received similar notification or are they just trying to get my car in the shop so they can notify me of the $2000 worth of "other repairs" it needs?

I've been much less than thrilled with my local dealer and would rather not deal with them at all unless this is a serious issue.

    Thanks

They did not give me a recall #. The girl was not very knowledgable and asked 3 different times if I wanted to make an appointment before giving me any info about the recall.

I'm not super excited to bring my car into their service center only to pick it up with some new problem that wasn't there before and a list of things they say need repair, especially since I've done tons of maintenance myself and its been trouble-free for a long time now.

I can just picture them giving me a list of things that "need replacement" when 3/4 of them I've done myself in the last 5,000 miles.

There was a recall for the heater valve, it's not new, so I don't know why they would call, but I would definitely bring it in, free parts and labor.

They can't do any work without your permission, so even if they try to get you to pay for work, you can just get an idea of what to check out on your own and see if it needs fixing.

so its a legit recall? I guess they just want to give me free $. I can't complain there. I just hope they don't fuck something up that was fine before.
            thanks

Don't quote me 100% on that though, I know there was a recall about the heater something, I never had it done, but there's threads about it. It tends to break and pour hot coolant all over your feet...

But I do know legally they can't do any work without your permission, so if you take it in for a recall that is supposed to be free, they can't do anything that will cost you money without asking.

BMW will pay them to do the recall, that's half of why they want you to come in.

Of course they will also do an inspection and hit you with the add-ons.

If it's the recall I'm thinking of, it is a heater core bypass that is added on to the heater hoses at the firewall. It's so that if the pressure in the cooling system gets excessive, it wont blow out the plastic bits in the heater core, which is an expensive (and time consuming) repair.

It makes transmission installation a pain in the ass, the hoses like to hang down between the block and bellhousing when you put the tranmission back in.

But, free labor.. cant argue with it. I hate my local dealer too, and I let them know on a regular basis how incompetent they are. But I still take the '04 325i there because it is covered and parts/labor are free. I just always have to bitch at them afterwards about something that they did wrong or something that didnt meet my standards.

at the dealer I work at here in Germany, we sent out a bunch of recall letters last year for e34 ignition switches. It is to get a bit of work in and to also try to get the people that are driving the "older/ need to be replaced" BMWs in to look at and see what is new on the floor to buy.
10 years ago I got a recall on my E30 320i vert for a radiator cap ( i guess the orignal didnt have the "caution this shit is hot" stamping on it).

Wait, does this mean I should go talk to the dealer about my Nikasil V8s? :)
