Intermittent Engine Surging - Need Some Help

    Hey there,

So my engine has been intermittently surging recently and I have no idea what the deal is.

    Here are the symptoms:

    - I will be trying to accelerate and it will just not allow it and kind of bog down and then surge back up and so on.
    - When I put in the clutch it will coast fine, so I dont think its a stuck brake caliper or the driveshaft or differential, seems to have to be engine related.
    - It doesnt happen all the time which makes me believe its not a vacuum leak since that would always be present.
    - Fuel pump was replaced 2 months ago, brand new, seems to be getting fuel fine.
    - I try the stomp test but I can't get anything, the check engine light is normally on, do I want to hit check to turn it off and then go ahead with the stomp test or what? I have never been able to get this.
    - I had cleaned out the MAF, ICF, New Air Filter, New Fuel Filter, Oil Changed less than 300 miles ago.

Any ideas on what the issue could be? If I could figure out the damn stomp test that may help, but I would need some more info or a video of it being done to determine if the blinks I'm seeing mean anything or are just regular blinks.

    thanks

Sounds like AFM to me, I was having similar issues with mine.

For the stomp test, with the car off, put it in accessory mode, 2 clicks where all the dash lights are on, hit the gas all the way down 5 times. The check engine light should flash once for a second or so, then the code comes, just count the number of blinks, when you have a long flash again it's done. If you get 1215, it's AFM.

That's for a late model, not sure if early is the same or not.

And how did you go about fixing it? You get it tuned, replaced, or what?

what year/kind of e30 is your car?

            ignition tune-up wouldn't hurt, too

I have the same thing with my m42. Happens even with the car fully warmed up when I turn it off for about 10 minutes. Turn it back on, try and drive and the same thing described happens.

Question on the fault codes. If you have multiple issues with the car will it cycle thru all the codes or do you get one code, fix it and do the stomp test again?

It will cycle through all the codes, then start repeating.

Which ECU's came on what years?

Does anybody know, or know of a link/site to be able to tell which part numbers on the ECU's came on which year of cars? (does this question make sense?).
