Gas gauge on new cluster is suck.

I know there're a lot of threads similar to this, but they all have a ridiculous amount of suggestions and I mostly want clarification on one issue.

I picked up a replacement cluster from a late model at the junkyard for 14 bucks to replace my 325e cluster since I am running an M50 now. I know my gas was pretty much out and the idiot light was on. I connected up the new cluster today and fired it up. The tach worked and the idiot light on the gas came on, but the needle was at 1/2 where it should not have been.

I couldn't drive it just then as my dad's blazer was behind it and I don't have the keys for it, so I don't know if the speedo works, but I'm pretty confident it does.

The solution I'm thinking is the right one is to 'tighten the nut on the back' but I'm curious how that works and don't want to go ripping it apart and fucking it up especially if its not the problem.

Another thing I've been wondering is which plug controls what, the blue, yellow and white. I assumed that blue was tach, yellow was the indicator lights and that white was the tach, but if somebody actually knows, that'd be really cool if they'd share.

Well, I don't think it would be that nut because that usually just causes the gauge to jump around. I really don't have any suggestions, though.

might be a bad gauge, it took 3 clusters for me to build a good one.

So, you think I probably have to swap over the gas gauge part then? (I assume it works that way. I've only dismantled volvo gauges to add a tach and they worked that way.)

it is NOT a bad gas gauge. Some early models use a different sender than the late models so that when the cluster is swapped 1/2 take is really empty. Everything is working its just getting the wrong signal Just swap the gauge from your old cluster into the new cluster and it will read correctly again.

the gas idiot light is an independent circuit from the gas gauge and is the same between early and late models so it will always be acurate.

Switched my old gas gauge back in and now it registers totally empty. Perfect! Thanks for the help.

+1 ... the early and late senders aren't the same, so the fuel gauge will be OFF. The float is just on/off switch and that's why it works with either one.
