I've been through a lot of tires over the years and almost always try a different tire every time except recently. My last two purchases have been the Falken 912 and I'm about to buy a third set for the 325i I just bought. For the E30, 225 50 15's run me $310 out the door and that is the best bang for the buck. They're on my quattro too. Good on the dry, in the rain, decent ride and fairly quiet. I'll know about light snow in the morning (90% chance they say).

All 3 of my cars have fresh tires, so no tire shopping for me anytime soon!
I bought my stuff through my Tire Rack Wholesale, so I got pretty good pricing on it. In the end it was about the same as going to a local shop after paying shipping and tax on the tires then paying to have them mounted. I would recommend shopping locally and working them for better pricing in the store. Most tire shops can work you some kind of deal just bring up the words Tire Rack and other shops.sigpic

I just got a set of Falken Ziex ZE-512 205/60R14 all-seasons installed at Discount Tire for $183 out the door. The tires were already discounted to $53/each for the 205's compared to $82/each for the 195's, which I found odd. Then they had a printable $60 off coupon for locations in the PNW (WA and OR only) that stacked with a $50 instant coupon for placing the order online.
Here's a link to the $60 off coupon for reference:
And the $50 off was for "Cyber Monday 'Part Deux'", but I have no idea if/when they would run that again. If you keep your eye out on the Discount Tire website, you might be able to catch a deal like this again.
