    Adjust Steering Wheel Columm

    Heh,

Hi guys, Nice to meet you all. I've recently acquired a 1990 325i Cabriolet Convertible.

We'll I have been making some changes to the car, as the previous owner was not nice to it. I swapped seats swapped relays fuses etc..

I need to make some repairs to the gauge cluster, but for the life of me. I can figure out how to tilt the steering wheel. So that I can easily take off the gauge cluster and everything around the steering wheel housing.

Any tips, Ideas? Can you even adjust the tilt on this thing?

    Thanks.

PS, Please don't flame the newb!! :D

I have never seen tilt in an e30.
      Remove your steering wheel.

Tilt was never an option on an E30, steering is a fixed angle - just pull the wheel off. If an airbag car, I think there are instructions posted on how to do this.

Thank you for the super quick replies guys.

I guess I will need to take out the airbag module, and remove the steering wheel.

Not much trouble, just wanted to know if there was an easier way.

By the way this is my first BWM, and I must say that I'm really loving this car.

I told my girl that from now on since, our first war was a BMW, our future cars must be BWM too :D

          Thank you all.

after recently working on my cluster, having removed the wheel gained me nothing. It wasnt in the way because i thought it would be easier to remove and install the cluster but it wasnt.

no need to pull the steering wheel to replace the clutster, just tilt the cluster forward, unplug the connectors and slide it out towards the side.

If you really want to remove the airbag (I did the first time, but havn't waffleswaffleswaffles it since) you have to do the following:
                  -unplug the battery
-let the car sit for about 30 minutes to let the airbag capacitors discharge
-pop the access cover on the bottom of the steering column and unplug the connector
-using a torx driver, unscrew the 2 bolts holding the airbag to the wheel
-pull the airbag straight out. There is a plug on the back that you will need to remove; I suggest pointing the airbag away from you just to be safe
-There is a large 22-ish mm bolt on the steering column. When you unbolt it, put the key in the ignition and turn it to disengage the column lock. You don't want to put that much pressure on the lock.
-make sure the turn signal is off, and pull the wheel straight off. Before you do this, make sure you mark the position of the wheel with relation to the splined shaft.
-install is the reverse of removal.

                  Hope that helps.
