without going into too much technical jargon, the primary difference is the displacement. 3453cc in the e28 m5/e24 m6, 3535cc in the e34 m5 3.6, and 3795cc in the e34 m5 3.8.

Give me the latter with a 5-lug swap in an e30.

i know it may be blasphemy, but i'd go with something like the newer audi/vw 2.0T. great engine. good power (i wouldn't want too much in an e30), turbo, direct injection, good fuel economy, smaller engine. or the I5 Turbo from the older audis like the urs4/6. i wouldn't want anything to big and heavy out front though.
