Just wondering, Ive been to tons of junkyards and seen tons of wrecked e30's but the airbags are never deployed. Ive seen some e36's with deployed airbags but never an e30.
Seriously though, I've not heard good things about the E30 airbags. I would not trust (A) that they would deploy consistently at the right time and (B) that they wouldn't injure me while deploying.

I have been wondering where this information actually started. The SRS fault light should tell you if there is a problem preventing deployment, and I highly doubt the "killer airbag" crap.
Cripes, GM even figured out how to make airbags work in the early '70s, and they have shown to still work to this day.
A note on the SRS light though, MOST airbag E30s have the damn thing blinking away up there due to improper service procedures, not through any inherent fault in the system. With the codes cleared, the system is fine. That is supported by the car e30this had, an unmolested example without amateur repair work. The airbags worked fine.
I don't know where it started. We've had numerous discussions about this before and I think it ends up coming down to personal belief. I have had NO personal experience with the airbag but have heard "stories" about people being damaged by the these airbags and somewhat inconsistent deployment. I'm willing to believe it because we know that airbag technology has advanced significantly over the last 20 years. This was BMWs first use of the technology and we can probably agree that it was not very refined (e.g. variable force deployment, enhanced sensor technology, etc.). On a basic level they probably do work fine but how about on a 20yo car with questionable maintenance and service history?
When you start the car the SRS light isnt suppose to come on for sec? like the systems checking its self? anyways as soon as it breaks I will get an Mtec wheel, but I cant justify taking it out since it worked very well when I crashed.

I saw them deploy in Clay's car a few years back. Bendashdash and Chris can tell you how they look and feel in action. I might have some pictures at home.
I've set one off out of a car that I got in a junkyard. I put a cone on top of it, and the cone shot at least 60 feet into the air. There was also a small hole punched through the pavement. Honestly, it kind of scared me.
The airbag in my 318is is still there, but the light blinks. It did that when I bought the car, and have yet to find a way to reset it.
