    ODO's service life reached.

    I pulled four of them at the junkyard all Failed in the same spot on the same gear. two of the cars where 91's lowest miles 111k Also the gears are soft to the finger nail, soft like a banana.

    MY theory::loco:
    Climate: My California cars almost never had a broken odo. mine worked till 220.
    Not as much up and down in the temp. Therefore they just chill.

    Both of the Texas cars I "have" came screwed up.. gear failure. I think its just that time for this component, especially depending on where you live.
    your thoughts and Where the hell is the rebuild gear set.

    PS texas blows.. 90mile round trip to the junkyard...

    My car is at 153 and still rolling. Granted, I got my car from Nebraska.

    My other 2 e30s (Texas Cars) had broken odos but over 200k.

    Oh and BTW - Texas doesn't suck just SA. That place is like a giant demilitarized zone.

        Rebuild sets are up on ebay. They get there from retards ripping apart junked Cali cars and ruining most of the instrument cluster for a tiny plastic gear or two.

                I assure you only on the fourth attempt did I spiked the ODO on the ground like a football. the rest I left laying in the passenger seat.
                Our junkyard in Cali almost always has its e30 clusters.

                    The ones I've seen at the yard are gummed up and soft. Mine went out at about 160K but only after I screwed with the trip calculator. I'm sure they are all getting to the point though, imagine how many times those gears must have turned to be at their current spot on the odometer

                    For those who has gotten new gear, do you oil them? Seems to me its the oil thats softening up the gears.

                      Mine has been in California all it's life and went out twice. Once around 275k, then again around 290k. I think the second time it was cause the new gear broke the old soft one next to it. You can buy new gears for a mere $30 from here http://www.odometergears.com/bmw.html

                          e34john-don't oil the gears. They are plastic and don't operate at particularly high rpm, so there is no need.

                          My california car went until 208k miles, with the same soft gear symptoms. I bought the odometergears.com parts, and they work great.

                            Mine is still going at 175k. Temperatures here range from 95 in the summer to 0 in the winter, and we have humidity.
