word. i got a new job too, but its not nearly as cool as yours. i'm just a waiter at Ragazzis (italian restaraunt in town). but it pays good money, for a college student.

This engineering homework is bloody easy. I should be going to MIT.

My cousin got his masters in Me Engr and is is europe designing off shore sea exploration equipment. He loves it. My major is mech. engr too and things are REALLY starting to pick up the pace. I'm tempted to go into UNCC's motorsport program. IDK. Congrats on the new job. Sounds fun

I hope you like your job; it sounds like it will be great.

I am a freshman engineer right now, and classes aren't too tough yet, but lots of time goes into it. I have heard of many people that are going to switch majors after this week's group assigment. If I do survive M.E. I hoping to get a job where I am not designing a door handle. But, there is lots of opportunities for engineering grads, especially in business (ie. consulting), and I could always go into that field like my father. Anyway, glad to hear you landed a good job, and good luck!

The work will load will pick up once you start getting into advanced class. Freshmen year seems hard, but its all uphill from there, especially once you start getting advanced and theoretical classes. Freshmen year is mainly about learning WHAT an engineer is, developing study skills, and surviving Chem/Calc/Physics. But, you get used to it quickly.

Do it. I'm a senior now (5th year). I've been involved on and off with Formula SAE since my freshmen year -- mainly serving a shop sweeper. Last year, I did independant research on suspensions. We had to rank choices for senior project, and I intially didn't want to do Formula SAE. Its a lot work, stress, and there's a great deal of red tape and politics invovled. But in the end, I said screw it, its my senior year, I have a job lined up, I wanna do a kick ass senior project.

One thing I've learned about engineering is there are plenty of "smart dumb" people. People who have great GPAs but not a shred of common sense (of course there's people that have neither). The engineer that can communicate, network, and be a contributing member of team is the one who will suceed.

Exactly. What a lot of people don't realise is that being an engineer requires a lot of project management and communication skills, neither of which is developed at uni/college.

For example, I work as a product design engineer, but the actual design work I do only takes up a small amount of my time. The rest is spent sourcing components from vendors, dealing with customers and working with manufacturing engineers to get parts built, from the prototype stages all the way up to full production. So yeah, management and communication skills are really important, and if you can emphasise these traits in your resume, employees will love it 8)
