When people put in Gumball Rally and say how cool it is.....I think it's weak. Commericalized.....with fucking stickers declaring you're in the event, and stops every night at 5star hotels. Pussies.
I loved the cannonball runs because they had heart. And had a purpose rather than playboys with nothing better to do than run with their ferraris.
I think I already linked this, possibly, but Rob you would enjoy this book perhaps:
I think it was the same guys as in the cannonball, just a few years later and faster.
for the record, driving that distance in that time results in an average speed of ~87.5, and that includes stops, gas, etc, thats insane to me.
I drove from LA to Charlotte in ~45 hours in a 45hp (from the factory at least, the car had 170k) VW Karmann Ghia not too bad for a vehicle that tops out at 95mph downhill with a tail wind
The cannonball guys had the pitstops worked out. Gas 'em quick, throw the dollars and run. I'd grab a lot of food and a bottle to piss in and haul ass.
btw, i've made a trip from where I live to Battle Ground, IN (for a school historical visit) in roughly 45 minutes. (Looked at a watch at start and finish) Mapquest says the mileage is roughly 71 miles.
To say the least, the trip was exhilirating! Now I can just imagine the joy of doing so in a BMW, Porsche, etc. and the entire nation!
There should be more to it than that, i hope. If its just to see who could get across the fastest, and not even get atleast some sort of trophy, then it would be a TOTAL waste of time!!! But still very very great entertainment :D
it wasn't really about the race per se, it was more about rebelling and giving the finger to the conventions of highway law enforcement. or something like that.
"why climb that mountain?" "because its there" along those lines
That looks awesome, I like how the one guy was saying they had a switch on the dash to disable the brakelights. That's a good idea, when I speed on the highway at night and I see a cop, I don't hit the brakes, I pull on the E-brake. Brake lights illuminate really obviously on the interstate.
