what would you pay for a 1979 528i?

Heres the story, great interior, 44k orig miles, little surface rust on rockers and fenders. Car is tan colored, i would most likely paint it along with the proper body work. What would you pay? I know some of the earlier M30 cylinder heads were not so great mechanically, but im wondering if this is one of the ones with a shitty head. Btw, did that have a belt or timing chain?

You'd have to pay me to take it.

Those early US spec 2.8 M30 motors are nightmares with all the emissions crap.

It's not worth a lot.. although one with that low of mileage is rather rare. We have a few of those early M30s, haven't had any trouble with them. Check out www.firstfives.org for lotsa helpful info.

Oh, and I bought an 81 528i, from Phil Marx (bmw guru, editor for roundel etc.) with around 100k on it, surface rust.. kinda rough. $600. That gives you a general ball park anyway.

ok, i just talked to him, its got a rear main seal leak, he said the ignition is messed up so you use a key and a push button, and he told me he wanted 6900 obo. I almost laughed.

under $1000 there was one in Atlanta I looked at the seller would take $650 for it. Yes they have the Crack prone heads, my m30 had one of these old heads and the machine shop found 5 cracks in it And there timing chain engines, the m30 l-jet is a pain in the but with tons of vacume lines and crazy emision controls. If you buaght it slap on a newer head, and convert it to motronic.
