MTN Bikers, I have a question

I need a fork for my 96 Specialized S-works hardtail. It had an Rock Shox SL on it but in todays market we don't build rebuildable stuff (air oil cartridge shot). So I want to get a new fork I want another XC light weight at a reasonable cost $325 or less and needs to be in the 3.2 lbs or less catagory.

The Sid race fits my needs at 2.5lbs and $329 but it's a 80-105mm unit where does the differant lengths come from. I did a MSN search and found a wide variety of prices with as much as $145.

I can probably get you a good deal on a fork if you want. The company I work with has a few accounts with various bike parts distributers and we can get Rock Shox, Marzocchi(sp?) , Manitou, and probably a few others. The 80-105mm on the sid race is the adjustable shock travel. Basically you can adjust the travel on the shock just by turning a knob.

I dunno about front forks, but the rear shocks atleast can be rebuilt.... kits are like $40. So I'd imagine forks can probably be rebuilt, but most people prolly just buy new ones. If you're ambitous, I suppose it could be done. Probably not overly difficult, just very painstaking and detailed work.

That's really all I know about MTB suspension. I don't jack about mountain biking, but have quite a bit of knowledge in MTB shocks. Don't ask me why.

You mean 1 1/8" steerer, right? That's pretty much the standard.

Anyway, it seems like Fox forks are the flavor of the week. Stiff, built well in the good ole US of A, and good warranty service. Your 3.2 lb weight limit would be exceeded by around .3 lb or so by the Float line of forks. They occasionally go on Ebay for around $350.

For the six years i rode useing manitou magnum and i thought it was pretty good. During that time peroid i did have it rebuilt once. My friends who have rode with both say that rock shox are better. Try to see if you can find a deal on a "judy". Manitous are not as expensive from what i understand though.

Judy's are the bottom of the Rock Shox line up. There averge weight excedes 4 lbs. Yea your gonna say lose 2 lbs of your fat ass that would pay for the differance but I would rather have the better shox and lose the 2 lbs doing it.

Maybe it's a 1 1/8 I haven't measured it. But I have a GTZaskar that has a 1 1/4 positive on that as I look forever for a for it. So on that note Yeah it's 1 1/8 steerer tube.

I love Marzoochi forks, there heavier, but they do have some light weight models. Right now I have a Pilot Sl Air/coil fork on my bike, I much prefer a full coil fork to Air but I do aggresive rocky trails so I need it. Mine is an 80-100mm travel fork. They come from the factory with the least travel, and you can tear them down and replace a little spacer and it will give it more travel, some are externally changable, I believe the SID is but don't take my word on it.

I second the Marzocchi. I rode the xfly 100 on my XC bike and I had the Monster T's on my DH bike. I wouldn't hesidate to get another set for future bikes.

They were cheap at the time. the Xfly 100 cost me around $279 brand new from supergo.com
