    R3v's reputation system

    Hey guys...

I'm taking a class on User-Centered Design at the University of Washington and will be using our forums as the subject of my culminating project.

Essentially what I'm supposed to do is perform a user-centered design procedure on a website's reputation system, and suggest a way to redesign/implement changes that will make the reputation system more user-friendly and accessible.

So for example, say somebody wants to purchase some car parts, but does not know much about the seller, and would like to learn a little bit via the reputation system about their credibility, knowledgeability, trustworthiness, etc... He could, for example, make an inference based on post count, length of membership, transaction feedback, and content of his previous posts and threads, and so on...

So, all that said, if any of you would like specific features added or improved upon, please offer me your suggestions.

    Thanks!

P.S. this is just a class project, so whatever design implementations I recommend upon completion of the project are merely suggestions, not criticisms, and I'm happy to post them in the appropriate sub-forum.

No, specifically the opposite. His idea is to study the dynamic of our forum to get an idea of where or what individual members reputation is, as being there is no "rep" system here.

Sorta like ebay without a feedback system...how do you know who to trust?

(# posts not in OT * # threads created not in OT with more than 2 pages) / (1+ # times featured in one of blunt's fantasies * average number of emoticons per post) = trustworthiness

Transaction feedback would be the best indicator of a member's trustworthiness of those listed. There are members here that seldom post but are very knowledgeable so post count isn't particularly reliable in that respect. At the same time, there are knowledgeable members that also do not conduct business (whether it be buying or selling) on this forum so it would be difficult to definitively identify those who can be considered trustworthy.

The rep point system on em0tech is good in theory, however i feel it could use a bit of tweaking. Much like when editing a post you must provide a reason for editing, perhaps it would help to provide a reason for giving positive or negative feedback. These "reasons" would have to be subject to verification by a mod or some other means in order to keep petty "he-was-talking-about-my-sportmaxx" points from detracting from an otherwise productive member's reputation. Perhaps a rating system? 3 stars? 5 stars? (or roundels)

              Great idea...

was also thinking of a "was this helpful/meaningful?" feature for threads and/or posts. Might be a nice figure to supplement post count. What percentage of your posts did other users find useful versus meaningless...if the majority of your posts are in off-topic threads, a system like this may reflect the quality and relevance of your posting behavior (or lack thereof).

                Sunday morning bump...

throughout the course of the next few weeks, we'll be collecting data to get an idea of what your user requirements are for the reputation system. That way we can develop redesign solutions that are driven by your feedback (hence the name of the course: User-centered design). These will probably include surveys, interviews, wants and needs analyses, etc.

Your participation is greatly appreciated. I may start a new thread, so keep an eye out. Thanks guys!

Nevermind...group members wanted to do a different website.

                  oh well.

Lame couldn't describe it better. Instead of working with our forum, where a member's reputation is paramount, we are working with a camera review website...the reputation system we're redesigning is how different cameras are rated by users. So it's user-to-product rather than user-to-user, the latter of which would have been oh so much more interesting IMO.

Thanks for subscribing anyway guys. At least there's some dialogue started on this topic.

bump...looks like my prof thought our forums would be a good candidate for the project, so as of now it looks like we're back in business. Don't want to speak definitively just yet, but please stay tuned!
