Some interesting points so far. keep 'em coming.
Looks like we have two different topics here so far:
buyer/seller feedback AND
content of posts (i.e., relevance, usefulness, maturity-level, etc.)
think about all the steps you would take to get this information about another member, and let's brainstorm how we can make it easier and more efficient.
Also keep in mind that we're using your ideas to build a prototype. Whether it actually is implemented is beyond the scope of the project, so don't worry about the website going through a drastic redesign. Feel free to think outside the box, and get a little creative.
Thanks for your comments and please keep them coming.
Here are the initial questions again:
What characteristics does an ideal reputation system need to have?
What activities would you like to perform with a reputation system?
What information would you like to get from a reputation system?sigpic

there's been some good ideas floating around here, but whatever system you implement I would restrict inputs to the technical and classified sections (or at least keep it away from the more opinion-fueled sections) as there's much less reason to assassinate character in those areas as opposed to, say, a heated political discussion in OT. besides, a lot of the goofballs on the forum don't post as frequently in the strictly technical sections.sigpic89 M3Comment

Anyone else want to chime in? The more feedback, the better...
Also I was thinking the following thread may stimulate further discussion:
Since it's an ongoing issue, there's got to be a way to make transaction feedback more accessible and less prone to duplicate threads.Last edited by elguapo84; 01-27-2009, 12:17 AM.sigpic

Does this mean no more fun or joking comments. I know from time to time people get offended but this is just because of the personality of some of the members that leave comments that most of us find funny and most times mean no harm or disrespect. I see a star system for buyers and sellers a great idea but for general use I see the post count the best way and seems to be working fine. My $ .02.

Thanks everyone for the input thus far. Please voice any other ideas that come to mind.
Once we've completed the brainstorming session, I'll compile a list of all the ideas that have been discussed. I'll have each of you who participated prioritize the ideas into a list of what you think are the five most important ideas, and give me a reason why each is important.
We'll probably start the prioritization process by tomorrow.sigpic

James made this a sticky so I could as much feedback as possible for my class project. I didn't ask if you thought it would work or not. I asked what kind of information/features you'd want in an ideal world from a reputation system for this forum (key word - ideal, it might not work, but we can still make an attempt to design it). Consider also that what you think may differ from what a newer member may think, especially one who does not really know much about each individual's reputation. That doesn't mean I'm not interested in your opinion, because I most definitely am interested. I just don't really care whether you think it will work or not, or why you don't think this should be a sticky.
Now I'm putting forth a lot of effort into this project, but that does not mean by ANY means that the system we design will be integrated into the website. It is a class project, and that's all. I thought I'd choose something fun and interesting for that project.
Thank you to all the folks who have given meaningful feedback. Please continue to chime in before the brainstorming session comes to a close.sigpic

Dont make this place like E30trek. I know this forum is more mature and could handle the system, but I still dont see how it could really be helpful.
New sellers wont have any reputation, so nobody knows how their transactions will be. It's a crap shoot. Sellers that have sold several items already get positive or negative feedback in the transaction feedback section.Comment

What if a very knowledgeable person joins tomorrow. He has no posts. How can you tell if he is telling the truth or blowing smoke up your ass? You have <200 posts. Does this mean your just a punk teenager talking nonsense?
No offense intended.
Not at all...
This might be a good idea IMO. It may not go over well with all the goofballs but we'll see. I'm interested to see what you come up with...Comment

This is the first of three activities. Soon we'll be constructing and distributing a survey and then we'll conduct a field study. Once all the data have been collected and analyzed, we'll recommend a design based on our findings. I'm happy to post our final design recommendation on the forum when we get that far (mid-march).sigpic

+1Does this mean no more fun or joking comments. one thing i really love about this place is that it is a lot freer then most other forums. i am quite happy with the way it is. i some times wish that the technical parts of the forum would compare more to the ones found at the 02faq page and that some of the members here were as helpful as the ones over there, but we can't have everything can we? the post count is doing well. one thing that might be cool is if the little titles under our user names reflected more on where and what we contributed. lets say i posted mostly in the tech sections my title would be e30 tech or something and if some one ells posted mostly in the off topic section their title would be more like space cadet or something... as it is now they do not really reflect that much about the user.
like what is mod crazy? i feel that does not say much about what i contribute or what i have done to my car in the past or anything...sigpic

Prioritization (please read and complete)
Okay folks we're moving to the final phase of this activity, prioritization. My team and I have reviewed your wants and needs feedback, and came up with the following ideas. Each represents a desired feature or characteristic of the forum's hypothetical reputation system.
-Seller rating based on frequency of selling
-Seller rating based on shipping time, quality of product, quality of description (was description accurate), and communication between seller & buyer
-Maturity rating (i.e., mature/immature, polite/rude, etc.)
-Post content relevance rating (usefulness, helpfulness, etc.)
-Post-by-post feedback based on feedback from multiple users
-Post feedback accounts for negative bias (because people have a tendency to give more negative feedback than positive)
-User CP control on how your reputation is displayed
-Reputation to be decided by moderator
-Gas tank display; other members can give or take gas away, and you need gas in order to post.
-Incentive to do good by restricting posting activity
-Reputation system restricted to buying/selling and/or non-OT subforums.
-Reputation system does not restrict opinions and ideas
-Rank system based on typical posting behavior (e.g., "E30 tech" if most posts are in Tech forums; "Space cadet" if most are in Off-topic)
Please choose five of these ideas you consider to be the most important to you, rank order them, and write a brief note describing why each is important. Please PM me your prioritized lists. Our deadline for this is Sunday by 7:00 PM.
Again, please set aside your opinion of whether or not you think a rep. system will work on this forum. Pretend for a moment that the world is ideal, and that it would work...at least until we've completed our class project, then feel free to trash our design recommendation all you want ;)
Thanks again to all who have participated, and stay tuned for the next user-research activity, our survey.Last edited by elguapo84; 01-30-2009, 04:43 PM.sigpic
