Even if BMW isn't ALWAYS at the top of the game, they're a close 2nd. Then a couple years later they always blow away the competition.

For example, the BMW M3 started out as a sub-200hp 4cyl. Now think about all the advances just the M3 has made in about 16 years. E36 M3 got bumped up to 3.0L, then 3.2L I6's. Now the E46 has an insane, high revving 3.2L. It's somwhere over 350hp in the CSL. And because of competition like the Audi S4, the next generation M3 will supposedly have a 400hp, 4.0L V8.

Also, the M5 is a perfect example. Started out in the '80s with the E28: 3.5 or 3.6L (don't remember exactly) 286hp I6. The E39 400hp 4.9L V8 was arguably outdone by the MB E55 AMG, at least in power output and speed. The new M5 will have a 500hp 5.5L V10! Easily outdoing all over mid-size sport sedans, as well as some Ferrari's in straight line performance.

BMW sets the standards, runs with a successful design until they're challenged, then come back with something that blows away the competition.
