DR30 Skyline. My little brother is in the Navy and stationed in Japan, I told him he needs to start looking for one of these, or an R32.

R32 is a much better bet from a driving point of view. Problems with them are common to all Dattos, though: rust, interiors fall apart, most of them left in Japan have been beaten to shit or are stratopsherically priced.

Tell him to lift the rocker covers on whatever cars he looks at - had too many friends buy low-km cars/engines from Japan only to find that while they've only done 80,000km they've never had a change of oil and sat idling in traffic for thousands of hours without going anywhere (meaning the engines are fucked).

If he's buying a GT-R, get one thats had its engine already rebuilt. Or buy one from Australia/NZ. Not as crazy as it sounds as there are some fucking nice ones out here (for not that much coin) and shipping to the US from here isn't too bad.

He wants a GT-S, something RWD.

A DR30 GT-S? I've got a friend with a DR30 RS-Turbo and it's not too bad in a dodgy 1980s way. He's also got a UR Quattro and I've got to say the DR is faster in a straight line, but way worse for handling and reliability. Horrible lag, too. His brother has a Sierra Cossie RS500 and its a WAY better car for a RWD piece of GrpA turbo history.

R32 GTS-t can be had really fucking cheap out here, but there is a good reason for it: they're complete and utter shitboxes. The RB20DET deserves to be thrown into a flaming pit and pissed on by a thousand HIV-positive whores with urinary tract infections. It is a nugget motor with no redeaming features apart from the fact it's reasonably easy to stick an RB25DET or an RB30 into it.

If I can save one person from an RB20, it's worth it.

It is the automotive equivalent of a puss and scab-filled waffleswaffleswaffleswaffles.

What the FUCK was Holden thinking, slotting in a non turbo RB20 between the struts of the VL!?!?!

The Rb30 is a great motor if you chuck on a '26 head, but man, I think at this stage of the game i'd prefer a 2jz powered 'line. Possibly like this:
