Poll: M60B30 or 90 325i with snapped belt?

I am only asking this for headache sake. I have the opportunity to pick up a M60B30 with all accessories, ecu, and tranny, for $600 pending block ID#. I need said number to verify if it is a Nikasil or Alumasil block. Or, I can get a 90 325i with minor damage to the front driver fender for $500. I have a spare head in storage that is in great condition. Basically, what I asking is, "What would you do?"

I like the idea of the v8 assuming it's not Nikasil.

I like the idea as well. It's just the fitting and headace factor I'm concerned with.

Well... one is a car.. the other is an engine. I cannot compare those, as they are fundamentally different things.

Maybe I should have added another poll section for the passives. "Should I just spend the $1100 on both to have my cake and eat it to?"

(PS: I've worked on a 530i with a nikasil motor that has 300k and is still running strong)

All the M60B30s were Nickel hardened bores...

It wasn't as big of a problem with the 3l as the 4l though.

                That would be my solution...

Three different stamps for the M60B30. Lastly being 1 745 871 - Alusil.

I don't think that is correct... I could be wrong though, memory fades.

Nope, M60B30's were just as suseptible to the nikisal issue as the M60B40's were, it depends on the cast number/stamp. If it was a US motor made before '95, it's likely that it is a nikisal.

M60B30's seem to be horribly boring motors that were a bit underpowered, perhaps a manual and LSD could help that out a bit, but they're an odd choice to swap into an E30. If you want V8 power without a wiring nightmare, I would opt for the B40 IMO. If you plan on going ahead with the B30 swap, save yourself the heartache and start replace any aged cooling components.
