If you wanted to you could buy it, (but talk him down first) drive it for awhile and if you don't feel up to fixing it or like it, part it out. you should be able to come up with enough in parts to cover the cost.

    lets play i spy:

    ellipsoids
    fogs
    decent interior
    mtech wheel
    bottlecaps (for the ricers)
    plastic bumpers
then you have stuff that random people want.

Indeed, keep looking. It always seems you can find one from some one who isn't an enthusiast asking bluebook price. And book price in perfect condition at only 150k is around 1500 bones. Just be patient and keep your eyes open locally.
      It will happen.

so the general consensus is not to buy. so no one thinks this is atleast a decent entry level e30? and if i was able to talk him down to a low enough price would it be worth it? i get the feeling it isnt thaaaat bad but you guys say other wise, and you are experts.

If you plan on modifying on the car at all I would wait for a shell with a lot less rust. If you just want to drive it for a couple months until you find the right car then haggle him down a couple hundred dollars and buy it.

I bought my first E30 after a few weeks of searching, then a couple weeks later I started looking again and put my car up for sale, It took me 6 or 7 months to find the car that I really wanted to buy. I don't regret buying the first car (I turned a profit off it), but it was frustrating wanting to mod but knowing that the shell your driving isn't worth modifying.

the plans for the car are to be a good daily for me to commute to college etc.
i have no serious mods in mind, maybe suspension but that would be later on.

Do it for <500 bucks. I'd drive it around while I look for a better one.

The problem with the rust, even if it's a dd means that your not going to have this car for very long. The amount of visible rust is a concern but I'm more worried about the rest of the body and undercarriage that we can't see. Even if you're not going to mod it, the body itself wouldn't last that long and investing any money into cleaning up the engine or suspension wouldn't be worth the money. Unless of course you get it for like $500 or less. but even then you can find better buys.
