    Converting to VW

I have had it with E30's. Just way too much shit to deal with. I am now in the market for a 2,000-2,003 VW GTI 1.8t. My engine, exhaust, chip, have all been sold locally. M-Tec I wheel and 17x7.5 Spades on Pirellis with spacers and studs are up for sale. The GTI 1.8t with a chip is a bad ass little car. Does anyone have an idea of what one with 40-50k is going for?

I hope you thought your decision through.....Before my E30 I leased a 2000 VW Golf, it was a 2.0L and it was the biggest POS I have ever driven. Burnt about 2.5 quarts of oil every 3 weeks, no exageration.....when I checked the oil it was bone dry. I lost reverse in the car about 3 times. Power windows broke. Tranmission replaced once. O2 sensor replaced twice. Went through 3 oil pans. And to top it all off, VW Service BLOWS, at least in my area. So goodluck and have fun........

Every VW I have had experience has been a nightmare..this is 5 or so cars.
Home mechanics may have better expereinces than these poor people did.

you know what swayed my opinion about these cars? the fact that the seatbelt randomly went forward on its automatic rails at highway speed. they said it was an electrical glitch. if there seatbelts are glitchy, what does that say about the safety of the car? I will never buy a car that has those kind of "problems".

Cars are just cars man...you can feel free to defect at will :D

I will not rag on you for switching over. I will just let you know that VWs are just as expensive when it comes to parts as BMWs in some areas. Their build quality has noticably decreased with time and you might experience an issue or two but don't let that discourage you. A friend of mine has the New Jetta VR6 2004...6 speed..its been to the dealer a few times already for leaking sunroof issues and some other stuff.. Also, very few cars out there can give you performance without a sacrifice in reliability..granted that some people have gotten up to 300hp out of those stock bottom ends...the sky's your limit...

I've owned both and worked as a mechanic at an independent european only shop. Needless to say, I've worked on both vw's and bmw's in numbers too high to remember. VW can't touch BMW for quality. Price for parts is about the same. You'll hate front wheel drive and vw's are a pain to work on compared to bmw. Having said that, they can be fun cars. The e30 is a simple, reliable car. It's eas to work on. Given proper car and routine maintenacne they'll run forever. I'll never buy another vw after having owned a couple of bimmers and worked on others. Also, a newer car will lose value quickly and cost more, both initially and for parts. Do what you want, but think hard before leaving the e30 family. It's hard to beat.

Personally I would not touch vw with a 10 foot pole. They look so good but run sooooo bad. A VW jetta turned my best friend off cars forever.

My friends got an A2 16v GTI. Cool car but, for the money he spends on fixing retarded crap and "routine" stuff he could easily have bought and maintained an E30 M3. But he's a VW guy so he doesnt want one. The best part is when he rags on my car for somereason or another and i just tell him im going for a drive and to have fun looking at his. Good luck

Mk II / A2 series VWs and The Corrado are a parallel comparison to the e30s imho. Its weird that we spend almost as much time and bitch about our cars yet most old sch dubbers and e30 guys seem not to see eye to eye by comparison save a few. Any car can go wrong and go very wrong, be it a dub or an e30.

I have love for the 16v GTi, SLC Corrados and the Jetta GLi... as much as a pain that they are I can see myself getting one someday if I got one for cheap he he....shit if I can endure & 'preciate e30s I can endure & 'preciate dubs too..fwd or not...

My friend has one of those anniversary edition GTI's and it isn't all that good IMO. Although I would like to build an old school bug.

OK, my first car ever was a automatic 86 325es, the thing couldn't even get out of its own way in the acceleration department. After that I bought a 2000 VW Jetta 2.slow. It could not sway me from the addictive fanaticism of e30 ism, even though I had only drove an automatic eta back in the day. VW will never have the "CLOUT" the BMW had, has, or ever will have, and sorry fellas, I will take that to the grave, fellow soldiers.
