    318is with 180,000 miles?

would it be wise to buy a 318is with 180,000 miles? I am thinking about getting it until i can find a better one. The lady wants 2800 for it but shes willing to go lower, what do u think?

180k on that e30 is not bad at all. but there are many other factors that should affect ur decision (rust, car body condition, a properly maintained engine, interior, etc). i'd say try and lowball the lady for 2k

I bought mine at 180k too. so far no problems at 230K (with new timing chain)

low ball her by saying that the timing chain has to be changed every 60-100k or else your looking at a new engine. usually a $600 job

Also see if the profile gasket has been done.

its a chick, do u expect her to know what a profile gasket is? when should the timing chain really be changed? not a do it your self i take it?

thats more of a bargaining advantage you have. the timing chain has to be changed from 60-100k. Its fairly complicated.

profile gasket is VERY IMPORTANT TOO.

If everything else is mint, but no service history, I would offer $2500. 318is owners usually know what they have, but you might get lucky and be able to lowball them.

i would think the profile gasket would have been done a long time ago

ive had the front engine covers off of my old one how much more is there after that for replacing the chain? im guessing it doesnt have a quick release...

I've done a timing belt change, but not sure about the timing chain. Heard its easier to take the engine out to change the chain.

I've done the timing chain on the 318is, not that bad at all. Parts are expensive tho, like 450 for parts, and thats from BMA, but i did change all the belts and water pump and so on since i was taking it apart.

at what mileage would you say the timing chain and the profile gasket need to be replaced?

at 180K miles, the profile gasket has most likely been changed as they failed around 30K.

If that 318is is clean, offer her $2200 and work your way up. No more than $2500.

I paid $2750 after lowering the price due to shitty brakes, which I had to pay for (new discs, pads all around). But that seems like a great price, mine was a bit more due to the rebuilt head and other replaced parts under the hood.

                              Go for it.
