probably more than your car is worth but if you love it like I love mine you'll still pay for it... A perfect paint job will run at least 5-6k even more if you want everything done, ie door jams, under the hood, trunk etc...

P.S my paint job was 6k

save the money and paint it yourself.

If you have access to a garage and an air compressor, then a nice HVLP gun isnt that expensive and with lots of practice you can get it down nice. that is what I have done. You can get good paints for less than $100 a gallon or even 1/5 that if you go an acrylic enamel route but that wont give you a show quality finish.

Then you can make money on the side painting friends' cars.

That is, if you want to put the work forward to do it.

Then again I just bang my car off cones and tire barriers, so I could be a bit bias on the view.

I'd like to see the results you got from painting your car yourself. I want to go this route as well...so post some pictures!

The last bit of painting on the E30 is being done tomorrow so I will post pics this weekend sometime when it is all finished. I have some befores as well. It had ALOT of surface rust, the hood was practically caved in, and the fenders and rocker panels were rusted away (hence why i got the car so darn cheap). But it was nothing some sheet metal welding, fiberglass epoxy, and bondo couldnt take care of.

Its really a gruelling process the first few times, no one ever gets it right on the first try (this will be my 2nd spray on the BMW as the first one, the paint was defective and didnt thin properly). Now that I have done it myself, I know why shops charge so much for their work. However, I will never pay anyone to do it anymore now that I can myself. Same with engine work, etc...

Well my plan is to prep the car for paint with my friend, and his dad has painted cars quite a few times really. All I have to do is buy paint supplies, which I'm still iffy on what exactly to purchase. But I guess I'm more worried about how to prep the car for paint. It will be only the exterior, no doorsills/engine bay, etc...

Just want to see how you do on yours.

Wow that's a lot of dough... but not suprising. I was hoping something around $2,000. I do have a friend that paints cars so I know I could get him to spray it. If I go that route how much would I spend in materials? Again, that is going factory spec i.e. paint code and process.

You are talking big big bucks if you go that route.

Chemical stripping could be a much cheaper way to go.

One of my friends got his e30 m3 painted for 2.5k with OEM paint at a very good body shop. No orange peel or runs to be spoken of on the car. However, it was alpine white so thats slightly cheaper than the darker paints.

My paint job was 600 dollars. The car was painted right before I got it by some friends of the dealership that I purchased it from. Overall its an extremely good paint job for how much it costs. I have the typical chip here and there and the clear is getting alittle thin on the trunk lid but other than that its in good shape for being 3 years old.
