Yeah, if you download it specifically then you may get one. But I've had mine for several months now no problems.
Then again if you use common sense you'll never get a virus on windows. It's the spyware you have to watch for on a PC. On my mac I haven't encountered this.
No virus software ftw!Originally posted by z31maniacI just hate everyone.
No need for discretion.

i made the windows to mac switch a lil over a year ago. No viruses or anything bad. Everything is just so much easier I dont think I will ever go back. Just make sure you download all of the OS updates as soon as they come out. A lot of them are to gaurd against viruses that come out and apple closes the door one30sport.net

You know it's funny, Macs really aren't even all that secure.. I mean about a year ago I believe it was they tested a Mac box, Linux (Ubuntu 7.10), and Vista box. Mac was broken into within a day, Windows took 2 days, Linux didn't get broken into during the contest but they got it afterwards on the second day.. Apple is also a shit company in general. There have been instances of known vulnerabilities being out in the public for MONTHS, basically everyone knows about it, and Apple sits there and completely denies they exist until they finally get around to patching them. Pretty awful security model, "It doesn't exist until we fix it, and then yeah, it did actually exist".
<-- Not a mac fan at all, I'd rather save 600 bucks, get way better hardware, run it on a WAY better OS (Linux), and buy more shit for my car or put the 600 in the bank.
Linux = for everything but gaming tbh.

My girlfriend didn't even realize she was using Linux on my laptop I had to explain to her that it wasn't windows she had been using the whole time. Ubuntu is super easy to use, in fact it's easier then windows. For basically any piece of software (even hacking tools) the software can be found in the package manager. All you do is open the package manager (it's a program), search the software, check the box next to it and hit install and all the work is done for you. It's pretty convienent because you don't need to google search or whatever for the software just find it in the manager and install.
Thats for Ubuntu ^, other distros are different.

Ive made the total switch to Ubuntu and I love it, the only issue I have is the music and movie player blows hard.. but the nice thing about Linux I can just replace it and use a different one.. I've had a hard time trying to make the switch to OSX though.. I'm sure if I took enough time I could learn to love it.88 M3

For the record, Macs are extremely vulnerable, there is nothing in the hardware or software that protects them. Your ports are always open, the OS kernel has a very thin layer of protection and the Airport software is pathetically easy to gain control of. Hardware wise, there is no significant difference between a Mac and a PC except that PC's are easily upgradeable Macs are not.
There are a minimum of 200+ known viruses that currently exist for Mac as well as about equal amounts for Trojans and Malware, Spyware is a bit higher. The reason most people don't get viruses on their Mac is that these viruses are not readily available and most exist on sites for many European countries.
Black hats don't write viruses, etc for Macs simply because Apple still holds less than 10% of the world market and there is no major reason to write for a market that small. Viruses in the United States have significantly risen over the past few years as Mac has gained a larger share of the North American Market.
The simple fact is at the moment you'll be fine without protection most of the past viruses were patched in the Leopard update of OS X. Norton, McAfee, and even Apple offer virus protection software if you choose to buy it. I can guarantee that over the next 5 years or so it will be come necessary in the US if Apple's sales continue to rise like they have.
