I own an s52 swapped e30 and a z4 (non-M, but plan to upgrade to M in the very near future). These cars a VERY different. The z4 is soooo much more planted to the ground than the e30 and feels much more stable. Plus it's actually very practical as a daily. As much as an s54 swapped e30 would be awesome, given that you're already questioning getting buried in a project, I'd definitely buy a z4m. A GOOD S54 e30 will probably cost you close to the same, all said and done.
