Can anyone guess what this piping set is used for?

Late 86 / early 87 models had a "fuel cooler" circuit where return fuel was routed through a small heat exchanger on the air conditioning piping -cooling it before it returned to the tank. I've removed the same from both our 87es and our 87 is.

Can confirm, the 86 325e parts car I have has the same. It still amazes me how so many manufacturers of the 80s thought fuel cooling and multiple accumulators in the system was important.
