I totaled the amount I spent restoring my e30 and I'm shocked.

    That is a lot of money, BUT you know exactly what you have , how it is put together, reliable, way cooler than any NEW car and well E30 FTW. Just imagine all the mediocre NEW cars that cost that much and are complete garbage and the people that buy them think they have something good or even nice, THAT is funny...

    There is another thread going mentioning how much people have in their E30's, most all these cars in the 1-5K range are close to needing a full rebuild to make them proper again, and its happening and the market price is reflecting. Its still cheaper to buy a car that is done right than to build one. Whats the fun in that!?

    Speaking like a true mechanic. Everything is good so far. I did not see the need to replace the ball joints. None of them had any play.

    I told my wife I will never tally what I've spent on my E30, so don't bother asking. I honestly won't either, it's a lot of money and would just be depressing given the current state of the car.

    Those were the days! I bought mine for $3.5k in 2008 as a well maintained two owner 320i auto with 160,000km on it. The only problem it had was a noisy diff, which the owner had decided enough was enough after an outrageous quote for a rebuild. I replaced it the first weekend I had it with a cheap wrecker one. When I did my swap I lucked out with performance parts - eg. bought my M30B35 with a recently rebuilt top end for $100, a manual gearbox for $150, a full poly bush and spring kit, including engine and transmission mounts, adjustable strut tops and Eibachs for $250 and a set of style 5s for $100, all from abandoned projects. I even picked up a spare Getrag 240 for $1 on ebay - the guy really wasn't happy when I picked it up. The most expensive bits were $700 for a set of Bilstein B8s, and a HD clutch kit to suit the M30 for $650. All in my swap was $2.5k. Since then it has just been keeping up with maintenance & replacing things that break.

    Last time I added it up, the e30 had cost me around $13k over 10 years of daily driving, not bad at all really.

    In contrast, my e92 has cost me roughly $2k in maintenance in 2.5 years + depreciated about $8k so the cost of the e92 will likely exceed the e30 by the end of 2021. This doesn't include logbook servicing as it has the dealer service package from the previous owner!

    I have been scared to add up what i have spent so far since i parked the car three years ago. But I just drove the car for the first time since then the other day and i dont regret the money spent at all. Now to get some final things done before I go and get my car tuned. Lets see how much power this K24 powered e30 makes.

    OE/ OEM is expensive. Rebuilding my M30, megasquriting my E30, paint, gaskets, door seals, custom emblems etc.

    I think im around 12-13k but I enjoy the car now and the only things left are the brake lines, fuel lines and rear subframe. Everything else has been gone over.

    Its probably too much to spend on a car with a student budget tho :P

    It can get very expensive, I have been working on a 320IS tribute, just have the body painted that was $12k, I don't want to even think about how much the total project is going to cost, between paint, complete S14, E30 M3 5 lugs suspension, and E30M3 interior and wheels I am hoping to stay around $45K not including the car.

    I've been keeping an excel where I track all my costs restoring my E30. Will never show it to my wife 😄.
    I've spent much less than what you have, but more than the car is worth for someone else, by far. And I still need to do some struts/shocks and am really trying to talk me to do a manual swap (anyone has a set available at good price?). Like you, I spent a ton on window Weatherstrips and things that, that no one really thinks about and cost a lot. I am still surprised when I see decent E30 well sorted for $10k or less.
    I restored a Porsche 928 some 5 years ago and it was even more expensive. The saying on the Rennlist forum is that it was $10k away from being a $5k car 😩. But I finished most of it and sold (had to move outside US for a while) for less than I spent, but not much of loss, considering all the fun I had.

    It is our hobby, if you were doing something else for fun, you would be spending money too. Enjoy it and forget about finance while doing it.

    Nice fresh paint and some goodies under the hood! I love the color. Looks like CEP is the only place that has both bumpers at this time. ECS has the front however the back is NLA.
