Hey guys, i attached a photo of an e30 i saw earlier today (looking to buy)... i know the rear well is very prone to rust and i saw this. The seller was very trustworthy and said that it came from tools that were sitting there (and he advertised the car as being rust free) but i’m a noob at cars and can’t tell for sure if this is something serious or not. the rest of the car is in great condition and this was the only “iffy” thing i noticed. If you guys could please give me some advice/ what you think because i really want to buy this car!! just a little worried...

It's not uncommon for those boxes to accumulate water from a few sources and to have clogged drains. Remember, tools don't generate rust on their own, they need moisture, and you can see the high water line in that box. Clearly the car leaked at some point or continues to do so, this is likely to be a simple thing, but you should pull off the inside covers for the tail lights and look around the edges for more rust. There will probably be some in the spare tire well and in the opposite side storage box.
Look under all of the rockers, boxes at the back, and inboard of the chassis rails at the floorboards of the front seats. You will find rust, there is no such thing as a rust free car, just oblivious or lying owners.
Whatever you do, have the car seriously looked over before you buy, no matter if you do it, or if you pay a professional to do an inspection for you.
