    "Black Betty"

Bought this off a craigslist ad for $800 a few months ago and finally got it into driving condition. Actually sold the wheels and tires that came on it to some guy with a VW Cab for $320, so that brings down the total investment considerably. We've named her "Black Betty". 1988 325 "Super e", purchased with a bad auto trans--I know, don't start, I'm strictly against a slushbox, bought it for the wife to drive, even though she can drive a manual fine. Just sparing my perfect Ronals on the 325is from certain curb rash. After much frustration and the purchase of a supposedly rebuilt POS transmission, got a good deal from another r3vlimited member--thanks Brett--she finally runs and drives very well.

Body and paint are real good, interior is mint except that it originally came with Silver Cloth and someone installed grey vinyl seats at some point, but they're in mint condition at least. I've never seen the grey perforated vinyl ones before. Some cloth sport seats are in the long range plan. The Z4 style roundels on the fenders really bugged me at first, but they're kinda growing on me now. Going to start the wheel refinishing this weekend.

Only other parts needed were front rotors and pads and all fluids changed, plugs, fuel filter and a couple of bulbs here and there. Ordering a new timing belt, tensioner, water pump and thermostat today since I have no idea when those were last done.

Now it's time to go out and remove the seats so I can shampoo the carpets and detail the interior. My wife will be even happier after I get rid of that skanky carpet smell.

I know--at some point, someone went a little roundel crazy. I'm going to take some fishing line and try and remove the one on the dash and see what it looks like underneath. Hoping that maybe it's just adhesive tape instead of glue. Pisses me off because the dash is otherwise pristine.

Engine bay still needs a good amount of degreasing.

                    Otherwise...nice progress!

Actually there's no grease--that's cosmoline. I'm going to see if straight Simple Green will remove it when I finish detailing the engine bay.

Interesting note on the vinyl seats--when I pulled out the rear seat this tag was underneath and states that the seats were switched from cloth to vinyl in 9/93, with the car's same vin. Where would this tag have come from?
