So, as some of you may know... I recently had an accident with my 1987 325is (with an m30 that had been in there less than 2000 miles.. i never even got to enjoy the benefit of an m30 oil filter) and the car is totaled.
For a few weeks after that I was stuck at school during a German summer program and couldn't work on my other e30... a 1986 325e. This weekend I started to work on it... I replaced the alternator and started to address the rust and subframe issue it has. the subframe had rusted through under the diff, and the the spring perch on the driver side had rusted quite badly. I wanted to patch the area up with parts from my 'is and replace the subframe. Last night I pulled the driveshaft, diff, and subframe... only to discover that the rust was MUCH worse than I had though... it's eaten large amounts of all of the square-tube frame of the trunk... starting before the spring perch, going behind it, and then across to the passenger side... where its starting to catch up. A lot of this was covered by undercoating, but when the subframe was out I was able to find places where the undercoating was flaking and the metal had rusted underneath or from the other side. It's really bad, and MUCH beyond my ability to repair... and way too expensive to have done. (the car isn't perfect anywhere, so that add to the 'not quite worth it' tally)
*sigh* so there go two e30's in a month. All I could do last night was sit around and mope.
Today I'm going to start looking for a new daily... I'm thinking e36 or e34. I need to buy one in the next two weeks so that I can get to work and school, but until then I'll be okay.
As soon as I get a daily: I'm going to do a total tear down of both cars and save everything that I think I may need... sell the rest... and buy a clean e30 shell to put my m30 (that i'm going to build and turbo before it goes in since there's now no rush), totally update the suspension, and go from there. I'm thinking this time I'll go for a late model though.
if you want, PM parts that you may want or need, but I won't really begin working on parting out for a week or so. The eta goes first, as it's in my parents garage and they want it gone.
