      Any ideas on how to reduce the graininess?

                          I'm not a fan of in-camera noise reduction, but to each his own. I couldn't stand doubling the time it took between photos...noise ninja gets my vote, it's available as a standalone program or as a plug-in for Photoshop. Just make sure he downloads the correct profile.

                            Have you tried Neat Image before? It's the program I use and I was wondering if you think noise ninja is better?

                                noise ninja is the way to go. also those are not 5 minute exposures, probably closer to 3. star trails get pretty long at the 5 minute mark.
