Originally posted by http://www.dgtrials.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9056DGTrials wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the folks at Elite Audio for putting on yet another great Elite Summer Nationals. Without the hard work of Joe, Holly, and the others at Elite, the 2009 Elite Summer Nationals would not have been the exciting nail-biter of a drift competition that it turned out to be. Additional thanks go out to all of the hard-working DGTrials volunteers: Patrick, Adam, Alan, Ainsley, Emily-Jean, Sarah and Tony, with special thanks to our super-secret judge, Doug Van Den Brink!
Last, but not least, we need to especially thank the drift event's sponsors -- Elite Audio, Festive Garage and 5Zigen -- not to mention all of the other sponsors of the Elite Summer Nationals event as a whole.
DGTrials used a unique all-day qualifying format for this event, picking the twelve top drivers to participate in the afternoon's competition. The top 12 qualifiers were:
1. Dennis Mertzanis
2. David Jones
3. Sammy Strongitkam
4. Brandon Geddings
5. Robert Fallowes
6. Dominic Frascella
7. Harrison Ritchie
8. Justin Barnes
9. Hayden Horton
10. Dustin Prater
11. Chris Orsini
12. Rodney Pilson
The selection of a top-12 made for an interesting bracket, as the top loser from Round 2 was selected as a "wild card" to fill out Round 3's four drivers. Additionally, as some drivers did not have all of the equipment necessary for tandem drifting, certain battles were fought one-for-one sudden elimination style. Demonstrating that not every drift car has to be a 240SX, Dominic Frascella showed that the E30 can have some serious potential. Dominic just barely managed to earn the "top loser" spot in Round 2, enabling him to clinch the wild-card spot for Round 3.
Finding himself up against David Jones, who had been consistent all day in his S197, Dominic was not able to make lightning strike twice in the same spot, as David's consistency helped him to advance to Round 4. Sammy Strongitkam in the Tiger Racing 240SX always brings quite a show, and he easily dispatched several drivers in both tandem and one-for-one rounds of competition.
Dennis Mertzanis basically earned top qualifying honors with his first practice run of the day, but he didn't stop there. With a near upset in Round 2 of the competition, Dennis managed to hold things together and bring some serious action to Round 3 where he found himself pitted against the Tiger Racing car. In what seemed almost too close to call, a one more time forced both drivers to have to dial it up a notch. Unfortunately for Sammy, some car issues and a bit of an over-aggressive entry into turn two resulted in a spectacular near-hit plus off-course plus radiator leakage. As both Sammy and Dominic fell in Round 3, instead of forcing another battle, third and fourth places were determined by initial qualifying order. This meant that Sammy would eke out a third place finish despite his mechanical problems.
The final round brought one of drifting's classic battles to the Elite Summer Nationals stage -- import versus domestic -- with Dennis Mertzanis' S14 240SX powered by a supercharged 350Z VQ30 against David Jones' S197 Mustang. David had not taken advantage of the tandem practice to the fullest earlier in the day, and seemed to be a little spooked having to follow Mertzanis' bright yellow car and huge plumes of smoke. In the end, Dennis proved to be the superior pilot, and was awarded with the W and $250 for his efforts.
Round 1:
1. Dennis Mertzanis (W)
12. Rodney Pilson
6. Dominic Frascella (W)
7. Harrison Ritchie
3. Sammy Strongitkam (W)
10. Dustin Prater
4. Brandon Geddings (W)
9. Hayden Horton
5. Robert Fallowes (W)
8. Justin Barnes
2. David Jones (W)
11. Chris Orsini
Round 2:
1. Dennis Mertzanis (W)
6. Dominic Frascella (*)
3. Sammy Strongitkam (W)
4. Brandon Geddings
5. Robert Fallowes
2. David Jones (W)
Round 3:
1. Dennis Mertzanis (W)
3. Sammy Strongitkam
6. Dominic Frascella
2. David Jones (W)
Round 4:
1. Dennis Mertzanis (W)
2. David Jones
The final standings of the 2009 Elite Summer Nationals drifting competition, presented by Elite Audio, Festive Garage and 5Zigen:
