I've been repeatedly discouraged from getting 16s by tire guys I'm told that the tires are hard to find and getting harder all the time. Is this true? Is there a solution?Comment

sort of. there are a few decent solutions but overall not a whole lot of options. you are better off with 15s in that regard.
good tires ("extreme summer performance"):
215/45-R16 kumho ecsta xs
215/45-R16 falken azenis rt-615k
205/50-R16 dunlop direzza z1 star spec
and... that's pretty much it.
