Maybe just get friendly with someone who has access to CAD and a 3-axis mill to cut up a custom bellhousing for a Nissan R33 GTS-T or Z32 300ZX 5-speed gearbag. They're very strong, cheap and commonly available.
Plus, they're smaller than the T56 and I doubt VERY much if you'd miss the extra gear with the right diff ratio and a 1200kg E30

I wan't an ls1 now... But it's just not possible to get a 6speed build for under 2k. That T56 is 2k itself damn near. 460le are cool but 6 speeds are the shit.Leave a comment:

Our CD contains several times the documentation that other swap CD's (like the M50 swap into the E30, available from other sources) and costs less. In the end you get a 5.7l V8 with twice the torque of any of the M5x swaps. Additionally, the LS1 engine can be very inexpensively hot-rodded with cams, superchargers, etc.Leave a comment:

Rally rego doesn't exist any more mate. And, to make matters worse, no car is allowed on the roads with any kind of full roll cage (one that goes into the front of the cabin). Also not allowed to be welded in, so you can only get a bolt in half cage engineered and there are heaps of other restrictionsLeave a comment:

even funnier they are talking about 500whp motors and $16000 engine builds.. apparently they've never heard of an E30 before. lolLeave a comment:

I printed out your entire document (yeouch) and took it, in a folder, to a signatory* who has pretty much given the green light to everything I wanted to do (including gut interior, cut spare tyre well off, Nissan R200 diff conversion, move fuse box, 5-lug, bigger brakes from an HSV Clubsport, half-cage, welded-in rear suspension/diff/tower brace, fuel surge tank, etc) and said it was the most comprehensive document he's ever seen and the best.
The CD is definitely worth the money if you have to go through the crap we do to get halfway interesting cars on the road.
*In Australia, if we want something like a 5-lugged, LSx-powered E30 to be registered on the road, we have to get all the plans signed off by an accredited engineer and then signed off when the project is complete. When we then go to register it for road use, it makes it easier to get through - though I might still need to do a tailpipe emissions test, ride height test, etc.Leave a comment:

Sweet.
I love the bump of a project thread without any new information.
If you want to sell your CD, put it in the retail forum.Leave a comment:

Looks like I'll be buying myself a secret Christmas present. I'm glad to see you guys documented all the work/fab/drawings.
Should help make this a popular swap.Leave a comment:

Steve from Seattle writes:As regularly mentioned on Piston Slap, the LS-X engines are the best in the world for their compact size, low weight, simplicity, reliability, cost and ability to make more power with simple bolt-ons. So I wanted to share my project to TTAC’s readers: we put a ’99 LS-1 and T56 into our BMW E30. Everything works, A/C, cruise control, etc. Seriously. It’s a sleeper, except for the “357i” numbers on the trunk (nice of BMW to make a…
