That was my MO before I saw this one. Now everyone will know my secret love. I do find it awesome that when this car is done we will sell our MK4 jetta wagon due to its overwhelming tendency to break down every 5 seconds.
Even if the MK1 breaks down once every two months, it still will be cheaper to maintain then the MK4, waaaaaaayyyyy cheaper.

Thanks man. Motor is ready to come out. All I need to do is repove the cv axels from the tranny, unclip the exhaust, and unbolt the mounts.
I found an engine up the street for a couple hundred bucks. It is a 1.8 that has been bored out to a 2.0 and cammed. I went and saw it today still running in the car and it sounded awesome. I am picking that up on Thursday. If all goes well, the car sould be up and running in less than a week!
This is what the motor looked like @ 1pm. The ac lines are now off the gigantic compressor and the valvecover and timing belt cover are removed. The new motor actually has the smaller compressor and the alternator that is located on the top of the moter. it will be coming with all accessoris as well as the wiring harnes and the ecu.

The only rust I can find is here. Pretty bad though.

Picked up the motor today. Bored with a 282 cam, about 8k on it. I saw and heard it run. $350 with the headers and management. Well, what management there is, the wiring harness has about as many wires going to it as my V1 does. We shall see if the headers are ok to keep, it seems like it's only surface rust, so maybe a media blasting and a coating of some sort.

Can't wait to see what you do with it. I've always had a soft spot for these cars. I should probably pick one up...brb going to check craigslist.

Yesterday after an awesome trip to harbor freight, Huff came over and we unloaded the motor. Not the best day for it, but I wanted to get it in the basement so i could begin the teardown.

                          Teardown begins

                          The head looks really good.

I ordered all the parts last night. Everything cost me @ $400. This includes the clutch kit, water pump, all the gaskets, new hoses, injector seals, motor and tranny mounts, and the shifter rebuild kit. The parts should be here by Wednesday. I won't get to the build up until next week though, I am travelling this week and weekend.

                            The motor is done.
It is ready to go in and we will be installing it on Saturday. Car should be up and running Sunday.
                            Very excited.

Fun car. I had the same GTI, only red. Looked great with the contrasting matte black accents. Mine only had like 60k on it and was really clean, the interior was perfect. Those interiors are cool too. Bought it in '94 back when I lived in Iowa but sold it within a year of moving to Chicago. Tried to post a photo, but it came up as invalid file. wtf?

Oh--how'd you get it in the basement?

Had it on that flat dolly and rolled it into the basement door down the steps... It will be interesting getting it back out!
