Cool. Sounds like you've been there a few times. I've only been there once before and it was an absolute disaster (a good one :)), I'm hoping this time will be just as good.

You just went from comparing an s52 non-m e30 to an s54 e30m3, but I'd still put money it wouldn't come close. The e30 may be more fun to drive, and it may FEEL faster because it'll be louder and more raw, but all things equal regarding driver and conditions...it will lose. You're comparing modern technology to 20+ year old suspension technology.

I'm also 28 and if i were to get a newer car to DD it would be a yaris. Next year i'm getting rid of all my post 87 cars and getting an e39 touring or a 95 m3 to daily.
The RX-8, yay for no torque/HP and shit gas mileage! I rode in one of the engineers at work RX-8, cool car, but not for me.

I love the reactions this has drawn out of people.

Oh and yes, I've read of SOME early clutch failures, but it's definitely not the norm. And I'd still best most of those are people that ride the clutch on hills etc.

Call BS all you want, it's true.

There is really no point in arguing with the "oMG E30s iz da bestus carz evAr maed!!!11!!1!1!1111!" crowd.

Dude. I am going to really date myself here, but WAAAY back when (10 years ago?) there was a BF Goodrich ad in all of the car mags (yes, guys, way back in the old days, we read these paper periodicals, called magazines, to get a lot of our information) touting their new GForce T/A KD tires, where their test M Roadster pulled over 1G on the skidpad using the stock tire sizes. Not some sicko 275 width 140 treadwear meats that would give a Kia Soul 1.0G roadholding force.

What's my point? The M Roadster has an "antiquated" suspension design. Also, the skidpad doesn't really yield THAT much useful information. A Ford Taurus SHO pulls .88G with its shitty runflats. Would you want to hustle this car on the track or on an autocross course. HAYL no.

With AST 4100s and some decent high performance street tires, I almost kept up with a 350Z driven by an SCCA champion road racer. On R comps. He would pull me in the straights, but couldn't lose me in the turns at all. 350Z was stock. E30 had suspension mods, an exhaust, 3.27 LSD and Star Specs 16X8 wheels.

Just throwing gas on the flames. ;) I like the 350z a bit. Really like the 370Z, and appears I might get to flog one a bit at a track event in July. And I think you made a good choice for a dual purpose DD. Only thing better is a Miata. Ok, not really. But it IS the "answer". ;)

Yeah, when it was only 3.5 hours away from me in SoCal, I used to go up all the time, now, it's a 10 hour drive thru Utah, so I don't go as often. What plans do you have? Maybe we will bump into one another, just so long as you are not rock hard when this happens.

I'd be interested to see how far suspension design has actually come in those 20 years. Yes, companies realized that customers wanted more "sport tuned" suspensions, so companies used some stiffer springs/dampening, and the cars can house larger rubber, but i'd be interested to see how far the geometry and potential of suspensions have come, like in the case of the M roadster using "antiquated" technology. I'm not saying e30s are teh bestest or Zs arent, im just honestly curious.

wow, if that place was 3.5 hours away from my buddies they'd either be in rehab or busy declaring bankruptcy lol!

Not Really. I previously stated that my non-M swap car should be able to beat one in practically any situation, which I'm confident that it could. My buddies have quite a bit of trouble keeping up with my e30 in the canyons in their 350Zs, especially on tight, downhill runs. In the straights, I pull at any speed up to 135.

Then I stated that my new M3 project WILL destroy a 350Z on the track. I'm getting fiberglass fenders, hood, and front bumper, with light wheels, and aluminum control arms to offset the weight of the s54. I'm going to mimic my current suspension set-up on the swap car for the M3; it's really dialed in. With sticky 245s all around, better brakes, and the more plentiful powerband of the s54, my M will NO DOUBT work even a modded Z on the track.

No, the moron I bought it from replaced them with steel ones! :hitler:

It's ok, I found a sweet deal on some slightly used ones that I grabbed already. :D
