e30 Project Blau (Cirrus Blau, that is)

So it's 2010 and here I am talking to some guy who sits near me at work....talking about cars and what not and I find out he's a BMW NUT. He gets me thinking, hey, maybe I should sell my bike and pick up an e30 project car. Well, that was about a month ago, and I've since picked up a Cirrus Blue '89 325i (2dr). And the project (and obsession) has begun....

Now, I'm not the most engine-savvy individual, but my hope is to learn by trial and error. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a complete tool...I do know some basics from my DSM days. But I've been out of the E30 game for almost 9 years (totaled my '90 325i in 2002) and trying to remember the ways of the roundel.

For starters, I honestly am having trouble figuring out what to address/where to start. I bought it with the intention of making it a long-term project, but in my mind, I want it to be near finished by the summer.

Any suggestions/feedback are much appreciated, as long as they aren't written in douchebag speak. I've seen some of the negative comments people have left on others threads, and there honestly is no need for it. These threads promote open dialogue, which is great. But let's keep it friendly. We're all fans of these cars and for that, we're all in the "family". Say whatever you want, but don't be an ass about it. You may not like something, and that's fine. Everyone is entirely entitled to their own opinions.

Having said that, wish me luck as I undertake this project. My goal: create a fun car with a little go and clean show. Basically, I don't need this to be the fastest car on the road, so throwing in a turbo is out of the question (at least, for now). I'd like to get the body panels sorted out, throw on a coat of paint, drop it, stromung exhaust, a few other minor upgrades inside and out, and finish it off by throwing on some BBS replica wheels (yeah, I am one of those who hate to spend big bucks for wheels, especially when you have to drive on these shitty slabs of asphalt that Massachusetts calls roads). I spent big bucks on some Axis Widetracks for my '07 Si (daily driver), and then promptly fell asleep one late night driving home and whacked them against a high curb. So the horrible roads and the falling asleep have driven me to look for cheaper wheels. I know there are plenty of haters out there who only buy the big name stuff (e.g. BBS), that's fine. Do what you need to do. I have nothing against that...just don't hate when I throw on some cheaper replicas and dedicate the savings towards something else.

Once the car gets to this point, then I can start looking to go big. But I promised myself (and my girlfriend) that I wouldn't go overboard and that I'd take my time with this car. I'm selling my bike ('02 GSX-R 600 if anyone's interested and in the southeastern MA/RI area) and using some of that money towards my e30, which I've decided to name: Micah (for all those movie lovers....Eurotrip).

As of right now, I'm waiting on the driver-side fender to arrive, and according to FedEx, that should be today. Which is a nice surprise, as it wasn't supposed to get here until tomorrow. So for the fender (found on ebay with an asking price of $100, but with the option of a 'Best Offer', so I offered $70 and got it, with $49 shipping), a replacement hood, 'is' rear spoiler, and replacement passenger-side front fender, I spent a total of $219 (thanks again, Sam - Mossman).

I'll try and provide updates as I get to spend time on the car, but the holidays (and winter) are not too far off, so I don't see me being able to do a whole hell of a lot moving forward, at least until the weather warms up.

Working on shrinking the images a bit before I post them here, so I'll try and get those up either later this afternoon, or tomorrow.

    Take it easy!

I'm building a cirrus as well
I'll throw in my 2 cents:

Having built a few cars (including several E30s) I recommend starting with the basics and making sure it runs right - basic tune up,
and then gettting on to everything on the chasis, that's where you'll notice your upgrades the most. Exhausts are nice for the sound, wheels look good, but you'll really appreciate the car if it drives and handles like new - or better.
Make sure the shocks and springs are up to snuff, replace all the bushings, especially the rear subframe, update the front control arm bushings, rear trailing arm bushings, shock mounts, brakes, put on a decent set of tires and you'll rally notice a difference.

I picked up a set of 3 piece BBS RS wheels (16"x7/8") for about the same as a new set of "cheap" wheels, this might be an option for you, there are some that come up occasionally on the 'net. From experience, cheap ewheels are just that, cheap, especially on crappy roads, we have them here too.

As to the mechanical upgrades, there are lots of choices, the M20 responds well to a chip and exhaust - Stromung is a good choice, I personally have had good results with Remus and Supersprint.

Definitely start with maintanence, you prolly know that from your previous E30 days though.

Sounds like you have a really solid plan. Any pictures?

              we've got photos

I apologize in advance, but I suck and the photos are still a bit large...I promise I'll get better!

the following 5 photos were taken by the previous owner (SCapelo)....

              Interior shot, driver-side:

              Interior shot, passenger-side:

              Some exterior shots:

              All Red Tails:

              On the car:

              Old hood/fender:

              Euro plate/bracket:

My buddy actually had the plate made for me while he was on vacation in the Azores this summer, so it's authentic! ha

New hood/fender: (hood is now on the car...will try to take photos later today)

Yes, I see it too....the fender and door don't line up 100%. But that will hopefully be fixed in due time!

More photos to come, as I make some progress. New fender going on today and hoping to do some maintenance work this weekend...stay tuned

Glad to see it's coming along nicely. Just curious, what paint did you use for the tails? And why not just repaint the entire thing to match? I'm looking to do the same thing to my Delphin soon.

Thanks....I used the paint listed in this write-up: http://e30.bmwdiy.info/red-tails/index.html

I guess I didn't think of doing the whole thing. They look pretty good in person, but I might end up either throwing on another coat or just re-doing the whole taillight. We'll see. For now, it's good enough. Gotta concentrate on getting that bumper shock mount yanked out so I can finally throw the front end back on.

So you live in Lisbon, huh? I was there 2 years ago visiting my grandfather. He lives way up north, Arcos de Valdevez, like 30 minutes from Spain. Can't wait to go back there!

Ok, so a quick update on the car. This is how she sits today:

As you can see, I've replaced the crumpled hood and driver fender and the rusted passenger fender. The panels aren't aligned 100% yet, so don't mind the gaps...but man is that hood a pain in the ass to get on. As you can tell, the paint on the maroon hood/fender is actually really good, but all I really cared about was the condition, since I'm going to be painting this car next year. I also picked up a new front lower valance from Mossman, but haven't taken any shots of that yet.

Here are some shots of the rust/rot on the passenger side that needs to be addressed:

Few other spots of minor rust:

Lastly, the 'IS' rear spoiler I picked up:

So my current task is to deal with the leaking brake/clutch fluid. No idea where it's coming from, but I'm going to get the car up on ramps tomorrow and take a look underneath....once that's taken care of, I'll move on to some other general maintenance.

I'd like to get the frame damage taken care of asap, but the paint job will have to wait until the spring (tax returns). Also, I've decided I'm going Alpine White. Thanks to > http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=739717

Was gonna do some sort of grayish/silver/blue, but I am just feeling the white too damn much. Granted, now I have to paint the engine bay/door jambs, so the price of the paint job just increased dramatically. But I figure, if I'm already going to be paying $1k+ for a paint job, why not do it the color I want and be happy with that for years and years going forward.

Will try and update this thread more often than once every 2-3 weeks, but I haven't made a hell of a lot of progress lately. Too damn busy.

Also, if anyone has any basketweaves (cheap money) or black leather interior, let me know.

                      Ok, I'm out.....cigar masters tonight!
